I am asking because my nephews 2016 Trd OR would not come out of 4lo and has been sitting at the local dealership now for over a week because the actuator is backordered. We tried everything to get it to come out and nothing worked. The dealer told him to drive it in and he was lucky that we had snow covered roads or a tow truck would of been needed.

Nobody else? I guess this is just a fluke incident and toyota doesn't have any actuators because of that

    Bump

The truck has now been at the dealership for two weeks and promised to be fixed on 8 different dates now. I went today to check on the status and was told the 16th. I mentioned this in another thread but I figured I would hopefully hear someone else experience with this problem in my own thread.

I haven't had any issues. I have already used the truck in 4H, 4L and 2wd without any issues.

@Mike330R had some early rear diff issues that sound a bit like this

Edit: doh sorry mis-read this as a diff problem rather than a t-case problem.

His truck is the second one at this dealership to have this problem. The first one came off the trailer and wouldn't come out of 4lo.

The dealer says its an actuator that toyota doesn't have or won't ship them. Service manager says he will try for a new transfer case tomorrow but I don't see that happening. The truck was ordered because none of the local dealers are getting the premium, tech, jbl pkg around here.

Also, not sure if this would help, but you might try to see if they can manually turn off the locker and disable it, so that you can at least drive the truck in the meantime.

If they're not being amenable, and you have other dealerships around, you might also call around on service departments. Toyota Care pays for towing, hopefully between dealerships as well.

Hope you get things sorted out shortly.

I know nothing about the new tacoma's transfercase so what does the differential lock have to do with the transfer case? I asked today if this could be only a problem with the trd off road and whether the other models had the same transfer case since they do not have crawl control

Well I don't know what changed but they just called and his truck is ready. I don't know if you can believe anything you hear at a car dealership and my family has been in the car business since the 40's.

I guess they don't like confrontation in the showroom when they are trying to make sales

Mine was in the rear diff, had issues going into 4LO. Actuator switch thats PULLS the gears together was not working.

How do you know it's the T-case and not the rear diff?

They said it was an actuator switch inside the transfer case. This was the second tacoma to have this issue at the same dealership. His truck would not come out of 4lo no matter what. I tried 15-20 times to get it out and he tried after talking too me and the service dept in how to get stout when he couldn't.

Was your problem part of the rear locker? I am use to the way 4wd's worked years ago and not so much on all the electrical controlled 4wds. I have had Eaton E-lockers and Arb air lockers on vehicles in the past but have no knowledge of toyotas new system other than how to use it

Does the rear diff lock once you put it in 4lo? I thought you still had to turn the locker on and according to the sales guy only once you're already stuck which sounds stupid. Anytime I have been stuck it was time for a winch or someone to pull me out. Turning the locker on at the point would be useless

Had this happen once to mine but restarting the car and putting it into neutral worked . Have not tried putting it into low since.

    Yes mine was rear diff/locker.
No it doesn't lock when you put in 4LO. You have to push the lock button.

Its great that yours came out of 4 low after restarting. We tried everything except unhooking the battery to see if it would reset back to 2wd. That probably wouldn't work either but who knows with all the electronics in newer vehicles these days.

They had to order an actuator to go in the transfercase to fix my nephews and the dealer or toyota one took their time getting it. Its a 2-3 day turn around at the least unless they have the part in stock. The transfercase has to come out to replace the actuator

I had mine towed to the dealer Sunday before the Super Bowl....Hopefully they can fix it before the snow hits...
