Look at my signature below. Until my 16 I have had 4-bangers. I overlanded these trucks in places most would never dream of going. You will be fine with the i4. I never once ran out of power while using 4-lo.

My four bangers, even in the older models, were better off road then the sixes. They were lighter, better balanced and low range will pull a weight much greater then it's towing capacity for short distances. It's the drive home at 75 on hills at 75 that is the problem. Even then, if you realize the off road capabilities and the money you save buying it, it's well worth it to many. Toyota keeps making them as the best of the inxpensive off road capable trucks you can buy. in off road, 0 to 20 mph in low range is not an issue...I would like to see a short standard cab, short WB , four, off road model with lockers. It would run circles around anything made now in the Tacoma. You would just need a visit to the chiropractor each month to appreciate what it could do.

That sounds like an awesome idea. A small ute truck with the wheelbase of like an FJ. Would be phenomenal offroad and could even be a jeep fighter (as long as they kept it cab on frame).

My favorite of all my Toyotas was still my 1st Gen. Standard cab short bed. That thing would go places no truck belonged.

Well, if you owned a business and used one as a light delivery truck and you wanted to make sure the drivers couldn’t speed, I’d consider it. ,)

mine does great off road! love my 2.7L SR. not the best engine for towing..but I don't do much of that. you will have more than enough power in 4-lo.

the automatic 2.7L has 4.30 gears. just something to consider. all the others have 3.9 i believe.
