Hey guys, figured I would start a thread on here.

I am working on a Custom ISBe3.9 Cummins to swap into my 2011 Tacoma I picked up over the weekend. This would be my second Cummins my first one was a 2002 Tacoma with a 4BT.

This swap is going to be unique as its going to be the first and only front gear 4 cylinder common rail as Cummins doesn't offer this option. I am also using the Brazilian F250 ECU calibration which is 200hp 405lb Tq stock.

Yeah, actually have it for sale $8500.

This swap isn't going to happen probably until next summer. But ill be showing off how I'm making it work. Hopefully when I'm ready to do the swap. Everything will be made so it'll be a straight forward swap. Something over the course of a week.

To give you guys an idea of why I am converting the ISBe3.9 to a front gear case.

This engine is from a 4BTswaps thread, so this isn't my engine.

The rear gear engine has a big gear housing, pushing the transmission pretty far back. By using a Chrysler engine adapter the transmission will be right against the engine.

Most of the parts from the 2003-07 Dodge 5.9 will bolt to this engine. The biggest issue so far is the oil pan and oil pickup tube. Cummins doesn't offer the ISBe3.9 in a front gear application, so there isn't an oil pan or pickup that will fit.

I used the oil pan from a 2005 Dodge Cummins

Then you can use the gear housing and rear main seal cover

Right now I am brain storming how to spoof the 1GR-FE engine signals. I want to have the 1GR-FE kind of talk to the Cummins engine but I really want the Cummins ECU to talk to the 1GR-FE ECU. This way everything from the A750F and dash works correctly.

How did the 1st gen drive? Curious as there engines are usually for like step vand and such and I feel like it's drivibilty and comfort wouldn't be so great.

Its all about gearing and transmission selection. The only thing I didn't like was my transmission (Getrag360). If I didn't like it I wouldn't be building another one.

I felt it drives better then the Supercharger I had on it prior to doing the swap. I am taking a lot more care into this swap. Hopefully when I am done, this truck will drive like it should except it will have the Cummins.

What about like excessive noise and vibration? Noise isn't that big of a deal but the vibrations would definitely get annoying.

And you will get alot more traffic on your thread if you put either the word diesel or cummins in the title lol.

Just depends on how you build it.

If you balance the engine and use a dampener it helps a lot, a lot of guys have their engine idle pretty low as well, around 700 which doesn't help. Along with motor mount design, if you look at the majority of the swaps. Most guys use marine mounts or other solid body design.

The noise is pretty bad, however the ISBe is a good 150lbs heavier. I can lift a 4BT block into my truck bed by my self. I can barely get the ISBe block on a pallet. There's no side tappet cover and the valve cover is made of cast aluminum. These will quite down the engine quite a bit along with the heavier block. On the bottom there's also a noise emission panel, there's a few companies that sell block stiffeners which are the same thing. Cummins designed theirs for noise emissions.

Then there's the injection system, the 4BTs are mechanical direct injection engines. The ISBe is a common rail with multiple injection events. This is probably one of the biggest factors in quieting down the engine. I'm sure its still going to vibrate and I'm sure its still going to be loud. But I doubt its going to be anything like my 02 Tacoma with a 4BT.

    A little update.

The Brazilian F250 has a different tone ring on the crank and potentially a different cam gear. If you want to convert your American ISB 170, 3.9 to the F250 engine calibration you may need to swap the them.

Fluidampr made me a custom dampener that will match the Brazilian F250 tone ring. As I am converting my ISB from a rear gear to a front gear, I used a 6.7 style dampener with the custom tone ring.

    20160225_105008_resized_zps5fhrpbvu_ec501b3b693772da7cf3ff1c84458cf72c609589.jpg

The cam tones are another issue. The ECU reads the pulses from the back on the engine so you cant simply move the gear from the back to the front of the engine. You have to machine the correct pulses into another gear and the 2 gears would have to mirror each other.

My plan is to use a 6.7 cam gear, weld in the tones then remachine them to mirror the F250 rear gear.
