Early this morning on my way to work i was driving over a long bridge that goes over the Mississippi River. Long story short, i started sliding out of control, doing 360's, and norrowly missed slamming into the concrete median or hitting the side walls and plummeting into the icy river.
Obviously my traction control tried to prevent this skid as i heard it beeping while i was spinning around. When i finally came to a stop, my engine was off. Does the Tacoma have some kind of fuel cut-off in an emergency situation? I did not hit anything, so no sensors would have sensed an impact.
I'm just curious. Does anyone have a viable reason why the engine shut itself down?

Standard or auto? Also curious to hear some ideas, I've never heard of it shutting down during a skid.

Automatic. I don't know if because i was skidding out of control for so long the engine just ran out of fuel from it being cut-off. That's the only thing i could think of.

We're you running with that plow engaged?

I am glad you didn't get hurt or inure anyone else. I don't think the fuel shutoff works unless there is a collision

Just thinking the plow could have skipped and rattled your crash sensors into a false read.

No plow... There was only about a 1/2" of snow on the bridge deck. I entered the bridge and got passed by a few vehicles doing 60-65 mph. I was doing about 45-50 mph, as it is Interstate 80 and any slower wouldn've got me ran over. About 2/3 over the bridge my rear end just kicked out and i started sliding and spinning. I definitely need to put some weight in the back now. I've owned several full-sized trucks over the years and haven't needed to do it. But with me having the short-bed and a smaller truck, i think it's necessary.
Back on topic... I still can't figure out why the truck was off.

Weight in the back and snow tires. I think the sensors could have possibly shut the truck off in a violent maneuver like this and especially if you were slamming the brakes . Did it start easily afterward ?

Yeah.... Just put in in neutral, and turned the key. Thank God too, as I was sideways In the middle of the bridge by the time I stopped. My rear bumper was about 1/16 of an inch from the median wall.

Haven't ever done it in my Tacoma but when I had a mustang I spun out of control a couple times due to rain/ice and speed of course. Either way the engine would shut off due to the fact that I had it in "D" but the cars to would be going backwards and sideways and such. Only way for you to stop it from shutting off is to pop it into "neutral"

Same thing happened to me in my moms 93 Camry V6 auto back in high school. I would also guess it was the direction changes and forwards/backwards quickly. I wouldn't worry about it.

Damn dude that is one scary story! Were you going too fast for conditions or do you have bald tires? Either way drive slower or get new tires!

My guess is the teuck going in reverse whilr the tranny was in D. The engine was not able to run in the proper direction so it stalled out.
A standard will do the same if you lock up the brakes, but don't apply the clutch.

Pretty much a stock truck. Only thing I've done is replace stock shocks with some bilstein 5100.
The same thing happened to me about a week or two ago. It was raining really bad and I hydroplaned and did a couple 360's and when I came to a stop the truck was off. Just put it in park and restarted it no problem. Luckily wasn't much traffic out!

Get that weight in the bed asap! These trucks are flat out dangerous on ice without it. Damn plastic bed.

You performed the pit maneuver on yourself so to speak. If you suddenly spin your drive wheels backwards while in drive, the rotational force going back through the drivetrain can stall the engine.

If it's slick enough for my rear end to try and slide out, I just drive in 4Hi. I'd rather pay the extra fuel than pay for new underwear and dry cleaning.

Glad you're OK OP. Not sure of the reasoning behind the engine shut off.

    Bone Stock.Why mess with perfection?Except...
Being from the deep south, it's easy for me to say, "Some folks just don't know how to drive on snow/ice". Just kidding, of course, tethsojh. I'm glad you weren't injured.

Last October I spun 180 when I was rear-ended while stopped. I didn't roll backwards at all but the engine had shut off.

In my last truck (Xterra) i was going up my steep snow covered driveway and eventually couldnt make it. While still in drive, i let off the brake and started rolling backwards. At some point it got to fast and stalled the engine. It had an auto trans. Not sure if this is related to you, but makes sense that an auto has a limit speed for going backwards while in drive. Either way, no harm no foul.
