I take my go pro out of the mount every time I'm done driving, doesn't take any longer than it does to buckle up. To put it back in the mount also takes but a few seconds, I'm sure some people might get tired of doing that but it never bothers me. Plus I can use it for much more than just a dash cam, I figured if I was gonna spend the money then I might as well get something high quality, but that I can also use for other numerous things

My GoPro Hero 4 black is the highest model and it doesn't have an LCD. I just use my phone to control it and/or see recently deleted videos, it does have a super small screen on the front that can be used for controlling basic functions

That thing is scary. Mirror on the outside, with a great big LCD sucking up most of what should be mirror...
While it has some good ideas, chinese implementation for this kind of electronic device is universally TERRIBLE.
Not only that, but the manufacturer of the CPU they selected, "Allwinner", is very well known for their repeated violations of the licensing agreement for the Linux Kernel; http://linux-sunxi.org/GPL_Violations -- so on that basis alone, this outfit should be avoided. The thing to really be concerned about, is that given that they aren't publishing the legally required source code changes for their kernel branch, you really don't know what kind of nefarious code they are running on it. On something that tracks your movements and records video of your surroundings....

I installed this one a month or so back, and I was thinking hit or miss with the quality/function etc. It's been a hit so far! Records in loops in HD in your choice of lengths. I have mine set at 2 min loops and it can keep about 1.5 days worth of vid before re-writing. The still cam function is good and so is the "G sensor". It can sense if the vehicle get's bumped hard enough to record using it's internal battery. It'll work good if you see a big dent or ding on the same day or such, but the con is that it doesn't give you a warning if it recorded or not...so if you don't see the damage until a few days after, chances are it's recorded over it.

Nothing scary about it. In-mirror LCD is decade-old tech. 2005-2011 Tacomas with backup camera are set up this way stock. When the LCD is off, the mirror looks like any other mirror.

I don't really give a crap how many patents and software licenses it violates. The name-brand products are made in the same Chinese slave-labor shops anyway. :D

I own this also and agree. A nice unit that is not very noticeable unless you are looking for it. Support is outstanding from what I have read to date.

My vote is the GoPro. Can use it for more then just a dash cam too.

Can you plug the GoPro charger into the power outlet in the truck and charge the unit "on the fly" so you can get continuous recording (looping) for a long trip? Just like you can do with an iPhone.

I have the same question. Will the factory installed Gopro mount fit any other camera?

BV was the first brand I went with because of their features, but god damn it their cams were defective and firmware buggy as hell. I went through 3 different models until I wised up. The forum threads at dash cam are filled with problems BV cameras have.

I actually had no idea that the GoPro has a loop setting. I think I might have to pickup a skeleton case and start using one of mine as a dash cam.

I have used many dash cameras over the years and the Garmin units I use in my vehicles now are the best by far.

They are not cheap but they are well made and have been 100% reliable.

Simple set up, good quality video ect ...

I have a large SD card set to loop, it records over the oldest clip, and it records for 30 seconds after power is turned off.

They make models with and without GPS info ( I don't have the GPS models )
