Any lever action people out there? I'm wanting to get myself one for my birthday and am undecided as to what and why. Deer would be the biggest it'd shoot at, but there's always that thought there, 'what if it was bigger?'

Marlin 1895gbl: 6+1 blue steel and laminate in 45-70?

Or a Rossi 92 carbine: 8+1 as blue steel and wood in .44m with the oversized hoop? Price doesnt matter on these two choices either.

IIRC, the Marlin was around 7# and the Rossi was about a pound less. $540 & $430 respectively.

Marlin 30-30, ammo is easier to find than 45-70 (Here in Ms anyway), and 44 Mag IMO isn't ideal for deer.

And heres a video from today, buddy from school enjoying my AR pistol.

I've got a 30-30 lever already. I'm wanting something simple to reload, too. There was a m92 in .454, also. But I don't remember ever seeing ammo in the wild.

I'd go with the 44 Mag then.

That's what i was leaning towards. I have a couple hundred white box rounds already. Ive got a Ruger 10-44, a Blackhawk, and a 629. But i never shoot them very often at all. I can see this being a plinker, too. I'm gonna contact Rossi and see if i can get a big hoop in stainless then get a stainless one. It'd be boat rated, then.

What are the chances you reload?
In a lever gun I'd go 45-70 all day long. I work at Nosler Bullets Inc and personally make the "big stuff". And the 45-70 is impressive to say the least. The 30-30 isn't a bad choice, as I like to have something different then others as why I'd personally go with a 45-70.
Marlin makes a nice gun. ( new current production, a few years ago they were putting out shitty guns quality and reliability wise. I believe it was Remington that now is the holder of the marlin name. And quality control has really improved).

I was looking at some balastic charts today and the 45-70 is no slouch. I do have access to a loading station and all the goodies. Id have to buy the dies for 45-70 as well bullets. My PiL has the .44m already and bags of casings, flat nose lead, and hollow points. I'd need to read up for a rifle burn either way.

What distances are you more then likely going to be shooting? (Some people are limited)
With a 45-70 you and get a flex tipped bullet from hornady and reload or factory ammo. And its supposed to be great on animals. And more or less mushroom out.
Our Nosler Bullets are lead nosed and made of pure lead so they are soft compared to others. Geared more towards steel shooting.
44mag wouldn't be a bad choice by any means. Both are straight walled cases so reloading is as simple as it gets. 45-70 will recoil more, given its pushing upwards of a 300 gn bullet compared to a 200-250gn bullet suitable for hunting. Plus that sexy 45-70 case!!

    45-70 compared to .223

Ease of reloading and the straight walled 'cowboy round' cases is what im wanting either for. Realistically, I'm looking at 100 yards or less unless I go away from my land. More like 80 or less is what my three lanes I have cut out for deer are. I'm not an avid hunter that must hunt. But I'll plant some rye and clover every year and watch my cameras then try to pattern a convenient time to go out there. I miss timed an old 12 point this year and bagged nothing. But between work, three kids, and too many hobbies it'll happen. This gun is not a necessity in any way as I have a dozen others that can take a deer. It's an 'I just want one'. I really want a Ranch Hand with a rifle buttstock, but then it'd be a federal issue.

I'll price the 45-70 dies today and see what Rossi says about a large stainless hoop then make a decision.

Good luck in your decision making!
It sounds like the 44mag would meet your needs really good. I'm just a fan of big bore rifles haha.

I think the .44m would suit my needs. I can't contact Rossi because all they have is a number to call and I'm presently out of country. I'll email my brother and get him to call and see what they can do for the large stainless hoop lever.

I missed getting a used Marlin .444 lever a few months ago for $400 by two days at a LGS and this is what's led up to this desire now.

You could always go with one of these rounds for stopping power - a .577/450. Next to it is a 30-06 round. These are Black Powder rounds made for the Martini-Henry Enfields. I restored an 1876 MH Mk2 - a beast of a rifle that can still be found being used in Afghanistan.Ammo.jpg 1876 Enfield MH 6.jpg 1876 Enfield MH 8.jpg
