I have one of the military modular sleep systems. You can use each of the bags for different camping weather and when it's used all together the bag is comfortable to -30. The outer most bag is even Gortex so sleeping in the snow is no problem!

I've contemplated getting a bivvy. It may happen eventually, but for now I don't mind just doubling over a tarp and sleeping in a bag, on a pad, on the tarp.

There's a gun show at the Franklin Co fairgrounds this weekend and that's where I got my sleep system..normally you can't find them under $150 online but I got mine for $80..might be worth it to go check it out

:rofl:I'm trying to picture a backpacker stumbling through the mountains carrying all that! LOL

No judgement here man. As you said, if you can camp beside your truck, load that truck up with some comforts!

I'm still young enough to say eff it. That is why I have a couple camping pads laid down in my truck bed with a mattress topper on them. It's the perfect truck bed bed! haha

    Not a bad idea..

If I wasn't working all weekend I'd probably check it out. I do like good deals on gear. Hell, I got my 0 degree sleeping bag for $60!

I could see myself spending $80 on the military bivvy, only reason I haven't bought a bivvy yet is that the lightweight ones (military ones are like 12 lbs) cost an arm and a leg. I think my bag weighs about 4. Gotta keep that weight down if your gear goes on your back!

I am a pretty gear-light camper. The majority of my camping is off the bike, and obviously space is at a premium there. I have a compact Thermarest, an old Slumberjack bag, and a old Eureka tent. I actually only use the tent in dire weather and I often don't even carry it on camping trips. I normally try and find a covered pavilion, like what you might find behind a church or something, and I just put my bag and pad on a picnic table and sleep on that. Easy, fast, free, and no dew to deal with as you pack up in the morning. On the bike I hardly ever carry food, cooking utensils, etc., since you are almost always within reach of a gas station and I usually just grab some chow there prior to my anticipated overnight destination. I don't know if this is really "camping", it's more like "renegade sleeping", and is a means to an end - the "end" being, laying down as many miles as I can on the trip and sleeping as necessary. It's hardly a social event, campfire, cooking out, etc.

In the truck I carry a little more, but probably still a minimalist by comparison to some. Queen size inflatable mattress and bedding, a Grizzly cooler, some food and a little single burner pocket stove. Meredith and I were quite comfortable in the back of the Xterra for 12 nights on our last trip, and we had no issues cooking our simple little meals on the pocket rocket. At it's coldest, up near Engineer Pass, we used sleeping bags and blankets but generally we just used blankets. If it get really cold, as I expected it would at RRG, I'll just leave the truck run all night with the heat on. I really think an SUV is the way to go for a self contained camp vehicle, if only for that reason - you won't get cold, or wet, and packing up is a 5 minute process - deflate the mattress and fold it in quarters with the bedding inside it.

I think I will pass, rain + snow and lows in the single digits, I don't think it will be worth it.

I'm more concerned with ice on the trails. Not sometimes to mess around with.

Hmmm, might have to make an appearance. New on base they were about $300. If I can find a used one in good condition for $100, I'd take it.
