I put my truck into neutral and hold the brakes down as hard as I can.

    Why isn't my truck moving?

And what's that burning smell? Anyone else experience this?

Shit. I'm reporting this. I might pull my dash lights fuse. See if that fixes it.

When I first got this truck I had always heard the ABS would act strange especially in snow. I tried it out the first snow we got and yes, it's not like other vehicles. Soon thereafter I put in a switch to turn the ABS off, this also gets rid of traction and stability control altogether.

Today we had a few inches of heavy wet snow and I got to try an experiment.

At my girlfriends apartment, you have to go down a hill to get to the backside of the building where her place is. The older lady next to her finally decided to give up the keys a few months back thank goodness and my girlfriend parked on top of the hill so I had a whole parking lot of fresh snow.

Hitting the brakes with ABS on resulted in the Tacoma locking alternating wheels, releasing it, locking it and releasing again before finally coming to a stop. I applied brakes right at the edge of my girlfriends apartment and just about went past her apartment.

Hitting the brakes with ABS off resulted in the wheels slowing then locking up as expected. We stopped at least 10-12 feet sooner.

I tried to be as consistent as I could with speed and how brakes were applied and was in fresh snow each time.

Donuts are also more fun without traction or stability control on.

ABS isn't there to make you stop faster, it is there to keep you in control while stopping.

    Well aware of that.

In most situations it does a great job.

In fact ABS INCREASES stopping distances on low traction surfaces like snow by a substantial margin

Yep. Says right in the manual. I bought new winter tires in November, and honestly, my abs has only kicked in maybe twice all winter.

I don't really like using 2hi in the snow. It's just annoying to me. It's not bad after I'm driving, but acceleration from a stop is frustratingly slow.

Do you use auto lsd? I usually use it when I'm in 2wd and the roads are snowy. I wish the sport still had the mechanical lsd though.

ABS kill switch, still the #1 mod in my book. Use it all the time. Really don't like the brakes on this truck, they're either full lock or nothing.

Don't tell me your ABS disable mod is being done when your bumper is installed. Or did you just have an !@$"#%# moment while reaching for the switch?

I'm convinced more than ever that my Tacoma had some of the ABS channels crossed - as in it would modulate the wrong wheel for that sensor signal. The ABS on my '08 Tundra works as it should, you still have some braking once it kicks in, unlike the Tacoma that effectively lost all braking once it started modulating.
