When i ordered my Inferno OR in September of 15 the tri fold tonneau was an option for my truck but i didnt want one. Now that i have a 2,000 mile road trip planned for the family in questionable weather i wanted to look into getting it to keep our cargo safe. Couldnt find them available, even went to "build" another Tacoma on Toyota's website just to get to accesorries and see if it was there. It was not, so i called a local dealer's parts counter to see how long it would take to get one and how much it would cost. After being on hold while he did some digging he says it is not even an option for him to order one nor is it available as optional equipment on a new one at this time. So there has to be something going on for sure.

The accessory catalog does have part numbers for a Tonneau but no other information is available. It wasnt listed a few months ago when I checked.

Another hint that Toyota is getting ready to sell the Tonneau cover as an accessory!

FYI. Individual replacement parts for the tonneau are no longer available from Toyota parts per the parts department.

I discovered this part status out when a tonneau lid bumper on my truck needed to be replaced (bumper must have fallen off). Dealer removed the required bumper from an in stock truck in order to resolve my issue.

Just a brief update since I made the original post.

Talked to my sales guy today. He has not been able to find anything in writing to confirm what was told to him: that Toyota had ALREADY (but recently) made the switch to the new cover.

It did seem to be fairly easy to confirm this by looking at any just received Tacos with the tonneau option.

This is a small dealership, however, and the fresh inventory had no bed covers.

Let's hope that anyone who has read this thread and takes delivery of a "right off the truck" Tacoma will be on the lookout for a revised cover. Actually, it would also be rather helpful to hear from new purchasers who ended up with the regular cover. Then we could at least call BS to the assertion that revised covers were already what customers should be receiving.

New covers must be out, alothough looka pretty much the same. We got one in on a long bed today.
I got my truck 2 weeks ago and it wasn't available at the time I ordered up until build date in the beginning of January.

Sweet! I know the old covers were not available in the LB. I wonder if it still uses those silly 6 posts. I sure hope not. The new cover looming is the only reason why I have not ordered my Extang Solid 2.0.

Same setup as the original. Didn't look too close to see any differences.

If it looks the same, how do you know you were looking at a new one?

The original one is the reason I don't have a 16. Don't want the original. GST only sells JBL with tonneau.

Long beds havent been available with the tonneau up to this point. Someone stated the short bed tonneaus were changing. Havent looked into that but I can say we have 2 long beds with factory covers which were not available up until now.

So I have been waiting for almost 4 weeks for my truck at the port. Mine is supposed to have the tonneau. I'm wondering if maybe this is a reason as to why it is taking so long to be delivered.

Looks like I no longer have a dog in the hunt.

When I made the original post, I indicated I had to choose between a SB truck already in the pipeline which allegedly would be equipped with an improved bed cover or to simply make a new order for an identical truck with no cover.

Since then I did decide to go with the new order/no cover and have recently received a build date of 04/01/16.

I'll still be interested to find out if the new tonneau is fact or fiction.

Mine is supposed to be in next week. I will let everyone know if it is a different cover.

I got the extang 2.0 added at purchase at no charge because they told me the factory cover wasn't an option if it didn't come with it I would have a 6 to 8 week wait so I got the truck with the hard fold 2.0 and it's weather tight except the small gaps at the tailgate so far i like it as good or better because no cutouts in the bed rail0217160935.jpg

Check my build thread - there's ways to close off those gaps. Your covers should have come with cab rail seals, and getting the separate adhesive tailgate seal does a great job in helping seal up those tailgate gaps (not the cover's fault).

There are two gaps at the cab rail where water can get in near the cab, and Extang has foam seals that you can put on to close them up. They should have come with the tonneau, but if they didn't (like mine) simply call Extang and they'll mail them to you at no charge.

The tailgate seal is what you need for the entire seam of the tailgate, and if you see the pictures in my thread you'll understand why. A buddy here in Austin came up with additional ways to seal even more gaps off.

If you use a pressure washer often, you'd be surprised how many places you can find for water to get in!
