Is there truth to this? Ive heard a few people say this but from my experiences its just been hard brake application/overheated brake rotors that cause the warping. I could be wrong...just looking for opinions.

Not so much over torquing but uneven torquing ..

I can`t say if it does warp the rotors but by the pedal it sure feels that way.

In my case after the inspection shop had done this I just broke the lug nuts loose and torqued them down even things were back to normal.

I have since found a different inspection shop.

In my opinion, that is hog wash. Look at what happens when you torque the lug nuts:

you have the rotor sandwiched between the wheel and the axle hub. How is that going to warp anything?

I don't see it. Hog wash I tell ya!

The wheel studs are in a VERY thick and meaty area of steel, which is supported by a wheel bearing close by. I cannot see how the rotor portion (face) could be affected by over tightening

Quite easy to put to the test .

Since Most shops seem not to care as long as the wheel gets on and makes it out of the parking lot.

It has nothing to do with over torquing !!

It is the uneven torquing by quite a big difference

Torque one lug nut to around 160 Foot pounds get the others to @ the correct torque 83 Foot pounds.

See if it does not feel like warped rotors granted it is much easier to feel on a 1500 pound car then a 4000 pound 4x4

Then some people don`t notice these things till the vibration is quite extreme while others are like the princess and the pea

I agree with that, I dont agree is if you torque all the nuts the same and torque them down in a sequential pattern just over torqued will warp the rotors...
that prob would "feel" like it too but Im saying over torquing causes warped rotors...I think not as well. Its heavy braking and or rotors heating/cooling in an uneven pattern that causes them to warp.

About the only thing even over torquing might do is break any of the studs that might be a little flawed.

Then quite a few people lump over torquing and uneven torquing as the same thing.

The best way to warp Rotors is come down off a 10,000 foot pass with a heavy loaded truck and poor driving skills then drive through that hub deep puddle at the bottom

Naw, but you can break off studs though...
