    Thanks for quick answer
    Can anybody else confirm this?
I'm a little apprehensive about jumping OBD pins, don't want to fry anything . Thanks just trying to be cautious .

I used a modified hair pin as a jumper. Remove the coating from the ends and bend it to fit. uploadfromtaptalk1452912480578.jpg

Also I found this PowerPoint that is very helpful in understanding the check procedure on the Toyota (works only on pc):

I could not get my 2013 to go in to check mode. I did get the light to stay on after several sequences. It would stay on in neutral and park but go off in any gear. I just figured Toyota changed something on the newer ones just like they did with seat belt chime.

I have been through most of the 29 pages in this great thread and feel confident in my ability to get the job done this weekend. I have practiced getting the AT Temp light on going from N-D-N. When the engine/transmission are cold the AT Temp light will flash a couple times when I land on N for the 6th time, but then nothing after that, even when I put back to P. Is that right? I thought a cold transmission would give me another couple AT Temp flashes when I go back to P and then go out completely before coming back on steady once the at the correct temperature. If no flashes at P is normal on cold start up then I am good to proceed this weekend.

I have also tested this after a commute in traffic when I know I am too hot to test the fluid level. When hot I get a steady flashing AT Temp light when I land on N for the 6th time and AT Temp light continues to flash when placed in P. This is all normal for a hot transmission and also signals to me that I am being successful at getting into the AT Temp mode.

Regardless, I will keep my infrared thermometer close by measuring pan temps. I know AT Temp mode is the most accurate method but the infrared thermometer will let me know if I screwed up the process and got too hot.

If a pump is needed im assuming the refil plug is in a tight spot to get to also.
    Anybody done this procedure yet?
Im going to try today and cant remember how tight it was for the fill hole last time i was under there.
Also. It states to install new gasket and o-ring. Is this really necessary?

Im asking you guys in order to save the embarrassment of the dealership when they have no idea what im talking about if I were to ask them.

I ended up using the OBD Fusion app on my iPhone to measure the fluid temperature. As the Tacoma was warming up I took several measurements on the pan with my infrared thermometer. From cold start through 110 degrees the OBD Fusion temperature and the pan temperature measured by my infrared thermometer were within 1 degree of each other. After 110 through 115 I started to notice a 2-3 degree temperature lag at the pan. I am not an expert but I think if you are between 118 and 123 with a infrared thermometer then you are in the perfect range to set the ATF level.

Were you having a hard time getting it into temp check by jumping those 2 odb pins is that why you ended up using your phone?
Are you 2nd gen or 3rd? N how was it getting to the fill hole? Tight with the wrench?

I think I was getting into temp check mode fine but decided I was more comfortable using an OBD scan tool and for fun I frequently measured my pan temp with an infrared thermometer. That said, if anyone is having trouble getting into temp check mode it is my judgement after conducting unscientific tests that using an infrared thermometer to measure pan temps will work fine. Yes there is a temp lag at the pan but I never found the lag to be more than 2-3 degrees from the actual temp. If you are using an infrared thermometer and target a narrower pan temp range of say 118-123 degrees, then in my judgement you will still be falling within the actual 115-130 range needed to set the correct ATF level.

I have a 2014 (2nd gen Tacoma). Getting to the fill whole on my truck was easy. The bolt was a little tight but it was at about the right tightness you would expect to prevent leakage.

I crawled under mine yesterday and the fill plug is easy to get to. The problem is filling it with fluid. I was going to use a pump but the fluid now comes in a wide mouth. I am just going to buy about 3' of clear hose and fill from the top with a funnel.
