So the only way to check it is to service it?

    Exactly ^^^

Which isn't necessarily a good way to check it either.

Welcome to TW.....sometimes some of the users get a little cranky. You're new here so I'll tell you why those two said that. They like it when people use the search bar, which is towards the top right, and recently the transmission has been a big heavily discussed issue. Like others said earlier, you can check it but it does require a little bit of work and patience. You can't just drop the plug and stick your finger in and hope for the best. Check out these links, they may help you out some:

Also, if yours is 4x4 you may want to go ahead and grease your u-joints as well. A lot of members, including myself, have found out that they don't seem to be properly lubed from the factory.

If the fluid comes out of the overfill hot enough for a second degree burn, it's good.

He's new, why not try to help him out instead of being the "Forum God's"?

I joined this forum when I bought my first Tacoma a few weeks back and there is so much negativity here...Trying to stick it out, but have seen a lot of childish stuff. Don't get me wrong, for every negative post, there are a thousand helpful one's, but the negative one's are the one's that stick out in people's minds.

I'm sure I'll get slammed for this one :crapstorm:

It's all good. I'm a longtime member of other forums/groups, non Tacoma related... So I've learned to filter out a lot of BS over the years. Lol. Thanks for the help though. I'll try and remember the search button in the future. Hahaha

Was it the cost of the dipstick that killed it? Too bad there is not an aftermarket kit to add one.
