Which TOB to Fix Chirp

Hey Everyone

I have been doing a lot of reading on a lot of different forums trying to figure out what would be a long term fix to this issue. I see there are 3 main solutions to the problem, but I was wondering who has had any positive results with the issue.

The first one also the cheapest is the TSB for the TOB, with the new larger TOB, new longer slave cylinder, and the new release fork. I already installed the new slave cylinder but now my truck chirps all the time. Because I read that some people have alleviate the chirp with longer/stronger slave cylinder springs. In my case it did not help.

The second fix URD's sleeve kit, which places a stainless steel sleeve over your quill in the bell housing.

The third is very new from URD which is based on other OEM type TOB's. Where the TOB is touching the pressure plate. I saw URD put this on their site at the end of last month. You cut the quill off your bell housing, so there is no going back. With it being $500 its about twice the cost of the others.

So I was wondering who has tried these "fixes" to this common issue, and who has had issues arise after performing these.

I have read some people have the quill crack off using the sleeve kit, and read some that the TSB again resulted in the infamous chirp. But what I am not sure of is if the chirp comes from the TOB vibrating on the quill, or if it is from the TOB touching the pressure plate just enough to make noise. Since it goes away when the clutch pedal in depressed to the point of primary engagement. I plan on trying one of these fixes soon since my TOB is on its way out and driving me nuts!!

Tom I've got the chirp as well. 2012 Tacoma with 80k miles. I think I'll be putting in:
1) New Slave Cylinder - $30-60
2) Slave Cylinder Rebuild kit. Rebuild is on back order-- none currently in stock in US right now - $20
3) New TOB - haven't decided whether or not to use URD sleeve kit or not - $240 for URD, comes with clutch if OEM replacement
4) New Clutch Fork - $50
3) New AISIN clutch (while I'm paying to have the whole thing opened up, might as well) - $300

With labor, comes out to about 1200. Sucks, but I want to fix this right and be done with it. Would appreciate some input from those who've done it, particularly with newer models.

Thanks for the reply I just order all the stuff and I'm planning on doing the install this weekend. I ended up going with the urd sleeve kit since I have only seen a few bad reviews which were all from years back. Supposedly they upgraded the bearing a few years back for better longevity.

But doing the same as you with new clutch install at the same time, but I went with the urd stage two since they give a discount when you buy their kit.

But I think your one of the firsts with the newer tacomas to have the issue. Since Toyota was supposed to upgrade all their parts with the tsb parts for us older truck guys. Also be sure to get the right clutch kit aisin has a few different kits for the different years and you'll need to get your flywheel resurfaced so that way your new clutch doesn't get worn out faster from the high spots on the flywheel from use now

 

I received the URD sleeve kit a week ago. Finally going to try to put it in this weekend. I'm considering the heavy flywheel though. Truck has 78K miles on it.
I also got and exedy clutch from Amazon

but might return it and go all out URD flywheel, stage III clutch and the sleeve kit. Need to decide today so the parts will get here by friday!!!!

I had the URD sleeve kit put in, a year and a half later 15,000 the chirp came back

 

Did the URD sleeve about 4 years ago. Not a ton of miles since then, 40K I'm guessing. I remain chirp free. Two Toyota TOB's in the first 40K, the original of course, and the TSB bearing, pre redesign.

Tommyboy222, there is the fourth option, from URD as well, and that is the conversion kit... more $$$$ though

 

True but I'm not looking at dropping over $3k on a fix for a problem that should have never happened. But all my parts are going in on Thursday. I went with the heavier flywheel cause I have larger tires and my miles are mostly highway/ dirt roads, plus the heavier flywheels cause less wear on trans and clutch so I figured spend a little more and it should pay off

Just started a few months ago. I have not done any thing yet, not sure what else there is to do. Urd has a 1 year warranty on it so its a few months past the warranty. From what I have been reading people have been getting about 15,000 miles on the urd before the squeak comes back which is about how long mine lasted.

Yeah I know, I saw that. But the sleeve and bearing was suppose to be the fix also? Not sure I want to keep throwing money at it. Maybe i'll wait a little bit and see if there is any feed back after some time on the "new fix "

 

I just ordered the heavy flywheel. Hopefully it will get here by the weekend. So this is the setup:
URD Heavy Flywheel
Exedy Clutch
URD Sleeve

That combination should be good performance, less than 1K on parts. Hopefully it will last me longer than 15K miles though!
I'm doing the work, so I'll save on that. Hopefully this weekend I'll get it in. I'll update on performance/ install/etc

Mak90 did you put in they new slave cylinder at the same time or just swap to the urd sleeve?

 

I have replaced everything 3 times all new, that is why I had said I am not sure I want to keep throwing money at it when I cant find a permanent fix. The truck has 75,000 and I bought it new

 

That sucks mine is at 120k now and this is the first time its getting done. The chirp started about 15k ago intermittently now its constant. Especially since I swapped to the TSB slave cylinder. Which I think pushed the bearing forward more which is causing the constant chirp

 

My truck has had a loud and obnoxious chirp since I purchased last year. I took it by the dealer and they all but laughed at me.

I will just continue to let it chirp for free until a real and inexpensive solution is brought forth.

 

Your truck is 3 years newer, maybe it will work for you

 

chirping means your TOB is gonna F up your quill shaft. If the TOB comes loose it could shoo through your clutch, or completely break the quill, bell housing, etc. Thats why URD designed the sleeve to protect the aluminum quill/shaft for the TOB to slide on. I'll take pics of the quill/shaft this weekend to see what the damage looks like
