First lower build was a success, a little stressful though. Had one detent go flying, but luckily I found it...

Cool trick that I'm sure has been discussed here, get a dowel rod that fits in the takedown pin hole, drill a hole in it that the detent and spring will fit through. Use your punch to compress both and rotate the rod a quarter turn then just simply push rod through with the take down pin. Will save a lot of time trying to find the spring and detent after they go flying... :)

Thanks! Yeah I used the old needle nose and razor blade method. This looks much easier. I need to get a set of roll pin punches too ...

Those of you that have built an upper or done anything that requires changing the barrel nut, have you used a standard upper vise block or purchased something different like a geiselle reaction rod or magpul bev block?

When I built my upper I didn't have a vice so I mad a jig out of 2x4's and screwed it to the deck railing, worked great and was free because it was made from scraps.

Can someone recommend a decent armorers wrench. Not looking to build a lot, just have it for maintenance reasons

I don't do any delta ring aka clamshell stuff.
But as far as flat top/free float rail stuff goes I really like this NC star, I like that it has 3 prongs on the buffer tube & barrel nut spots. I screwed some stuff up w my dpms wrench.

Next question. Buddy ordered a free float for me to put on his rifle. It came with 0 instructions. It has a couple thin metal washers/shims in one of the parts bags. Obviously they are for the barrel nut, but should I use all of them or are they for some type of small adjustment to get things to line up so use as needed or what?

Round tube or does it have a rail on top?
If it has the rail on top it's probably to get the handguard to line up to the upper correctly.

It has a rail on top. The one I put on mine did as well, and it included the same pieces, I put 2 out of the 3 or 4 mine came with on and everything seemed fine so I didn't know if I got lucky on it or what their intended purpose is. I don't like to guess when I'm working on someone else's rifle lol

    Question for you guys...

Just finished putting together my third AR. During the first range session, I noticed all of my brass was making a nice neat pile at the 1 o'clock position. My other two throw their brass to the 4 o'clock position. Don't know if this is an issue or not. Bolt holds open every time on an empty mag and the gun runs without any problems. I'm running a SpringCo blue spring with A Spikes Tactical ST-T2 buffer. What say you?

    If it's reliable/consistent I wouldn't worry about it.

Put a magpul K2 grip on my AR pistol in prep for the tax stamp, much better than the MOE grip angle for the short system.
