Navy Seabee. I really considered joining, but after looking everything over. It wasn't for me.

A Seabee is great. You're a combat engineer basically. You go in right after the area is somewhat cleared. Build, guard, defend. It's the navy, but you spend a large majority of your time on land. What good is a construction person on a ship? Can't build shit on a ship.

Talk to recruiters. I was 4f (medically disqualified . Otherwise I'd be a 2nd Lt in the army right now because of ROTC. I was going to the Citadel till I got the news. Worst day of my life. Now I am happily married with a little girl on the way.

So while I don't have any experience in the military I do have experience choosing a branch. My thoughts were this: I wanted to be the best of the best. I also wanted to get a degree. If I had joined up out of highschool I would have joined the Core. Since I was going the ROTC route I chose the army. My interests were nowhere near planes or boats.

At one point I would advocate the Air Force, Im on 7 years and was planning to make a career of it, not anymore. Most of today's AF climate and feelings of the enlisted side can be summed up in this article and other's similar(http://www.jqpublicblog.com/backbone-in-need-of-traction-dear-boss-nco-version/) regardless of your choice, it is still honorable to serve and has some good benefits, just try to remember there is more in the world once you've had too much of the kool aid.

I'll be honest, I didn't bother to read the whole thread but here's my two cents and why I love the Navy and recommend it.

So like everyone else is saying, there are a lot of factors that come into play. If you're smart, then here's what I recommend. Look in the CTN rating in the Navy. There are quite a few perks if you make it through A school. You get guaranteed E4, pretty much guaranteed E5 within 2.5 years, you'll most likely never deploy, and you set yourself up big time for when/if you get out after a single tour. The only "downside" is that you sign a 6 year contract instead of a 4 year That's how you get E4 automatically. a CTN is basically a computer networks analyst. This pays big money in the civilian world. A lot of people will do a 6 year tour and use the experience/security clearance to land a high paying job. Up in the DC area, you're almost guaranteed 6 figures. No bullshit. You may be thinking "well I am terrible with computers, so I can't do that." I didn't know shit about computers before school (and still barely do) yet here I am, 4.5 years later. Again, this is all riding on if you're smart. If you're only kinda smart, check out IT. Another great field. Hope my two cents helps and feel free to PM me with questions.

EDIT: Almost forgot about reenlistment bonuses! Let's just say it's a shit load of money...depending on a few variables, it can be around 50k

If you or anyone is thinking of joining any active, reserve, or guard branch of service you need to read what xenophon posted and then reread it again. In my opinion it should be stickied for anyone wanting to join.

the recall up to 8 years is primarily due to those critical skills. obviously if you join as a cook or something simple, odds are you won't be called back in.

Gulfport still sucks, and Colmers was the worst chow hall on any base I ever visited. I'm sure you guys didn't like our Jodie's any more than we liked yours. Lol. Good people though.

Plan on going to college and doing a double major in petroleum and mechanical engineering and then entering a branch as an officer.

Well OP I'll say just this... Every mama crow thinks her baby bird is the blackest so everyone is going to say their branch is the best. All the recruiters are going to say why their branch is the best. The best thing you can do is figure out what it is exactly you want to do when you're done with the military. The military is just a stepping stone to what you're going to do afterwards if that makes sense. Uncle Sam isn't going to keep you around until you're done working. You're going to do 20 (maybe more) years of service and then Uncle Sam is going to thank you for your service and show you the door. The best thing you can do is find a career field which you enjoy that's applicable in the real real world after you get out and roll with that.
