The Ontario laws are changing so modified vehicles will be annually inspected and need to pass safety. All modifications must be factory approved. Tires can not stick out past wheel wells. Buncha horse cockery. Anyone live somewhere where these laws apply? Please let me know what you do, or what else I should expect to get the shaft on. Are LT kits approved? I will be buying it through a Toyota dealer, but I a not sure if that means "Factory Approved".
    Plan -
TC +2 kit (was going to trim but I guess I need glass now? Can someone confirm this)
    Pelfreybilt front bumper
Brute Force Fab high clearance rear with swingout
    Beadlock method wheels (105)
    - - - -
That is everything I want to do that could be questionable come safety, or when these new laws kick in. I looked into this a bit but the legal jibber jabber is next to impossible to understand and I don't know what kind of action they will push on this once it comes into play. In Northern Ontario every 3rd vehicle is a lifted to the sky dodge ram diesel, so maybe my lil taco can slip the radar on this?

    There's a reason for that.

Yeah but one day my lack of understanding may come to mite me in the ass. Nothing like spending 10,000 dollars to make your truck illegal....

Plus it would make a shit ton of vehicles on the road illegal - i don't think they can do that!

Something tells me the Total Chaos kit may be safe for our military but not 'Factory Approved.' What this really means is that the manufacturer can afford better lobbyist.

You guys are reading too much into this law.

    1) Parts do not need to be 'factory approved'.
    2) Ride height only applies to OEM air suspension (Section 2:1).
    3) As long as parts meet or exceed OEM, or are DOT approved... good to go
    4) Some shops are turning in their documentation slips and inspection certificates, or are now refusing to do safeties because of the BS involved.

... and it all still depends on the technician's interpretation. If you get an asshole, move on. I would suggest that you buddy up to one. No worries if you've built your truck safely and it's clean. The gov't just wants the rust bucket 90's Buick/Pontiac/spray bombed fart-piped Honda Shitics and other shit-boxes off the road.

There are many discussions on various boards:

    http://www.ontariorodders.activeboa...to-the-ontario-safety-inspection-stan/?page=1

    http://redliners.ca/forums/showthread.php?34558-Ontario-Safety-Inspection-List

BTW, as per their definitions on page 8:

"OEM standard" – means the manufacturing methods, component and assembly quality levels, and performance levels set by the manufacturer of a vehicle or vehicle component to ensure a vehicle is able to perform safely as intended. It includes component quality, performance levels, repair methods, durability, safety and the service methods outlined in the warranty and service literature provided for the use and maintenance of a vehicle. Parts supplied by OEM, and established aftermarket manufacturers of parts intended for direct replacement of OEM parts, are generally considered to meet OEM standard

My truck's mods are way above OEM standard. It can hardly be disqualified for being better than stock.

If you're worried about a safety, print the document and bring it with you:

    http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/trucks/pdfs/passenger-light-duty-vehicle-inspection-standard.pdf

He had a link to a legitimate source. I think it was MTO with some screenshots but I can't find it now.
This guy! Thank you for the clarification. I guess offset I will just ride out til someone says something and worry about it when it happens, just like my illegal tint. Thank you for the involved answer. So I get to keep throwing my money into this depreciating anti-investment of a machine and not get fined for it?!!!

Well, on the other side, I've seen some pretty extreme examples that looked dangerous. I don't think improvements and upgrades like the ones that I've seen on this site would ever be a problem. I have to get my truck inspected every year anyway to pull my horse trailer, and other than the cost, the inspection brings peace of mind. If I'm ever in an accident, an insurance investigator would have a difficult time claiming my truck was unsafe. Keep it clean, boys, and you'll be good.

Your Ontario insurance likes your lift even less. Seems some companies are not insuring lifted trucks anymore, mine has me with a 'special' carrier that costs $200 more a yr.. I checked with lots of places and was simply told no. WTF, not like i'm running hockey pucks and shit! Anyway supposedly a company can deny a claim on a modified vehicle now.. Dunno how that would go in court if the modifications are not the direct cause of a claim being filed.

No mention of fines in the document. That is another story/dept.

As for a safety, you only have to worry about it when you sell your truck, or if the gov't decides that everyone jump in the pool once a year (for a fee).

I, on the other hand, have Farm plates which exclude me from a pile of bullshit like e-tests and weight loads. You can't get them anymore without a hassle, so I'm hanging on to mine!

I'm not sure that what is done to vehicle after it has 1+ km on it is all that relevant. All the vehicles on the road are modified through maintenance and repair. I believe the issue is safety and contributory negligence. Until insurance companies require their own safety checks, they either insure the vehicle or not. It's up to you to make sure it's safe. I've never had an insurance company ask me a to provide any mechanical details about any vehicle I've ever owned.

My taco had a 3 inch OME lift and sliders when i got in a minor accident where the guy hit me, the slider saved massive damage. they didn't even know it was lifted or if they did they didn't care. then when i picked up my jeep within the 1st 3 questions i was asked if i was going to modify it, i said yes i'm gonna lift it. the company i'm with is good with up to 3 inches of lift and 35 inch tires.

all this stuff really is for the morons doing ghetto lifts and as usual the shitty bunch complicate things for the rest of us.

I have heard that before. Any lift 4"+ is "uninsurable".

Interesting, never heard of or saw a farm plate. I guess this is a big hype over a small issue? Thanks everyone for the input. I will be much more educated next time someone mentions it. PS is there anywhere good to go wheeling out east? Planning on driving to Halifax in the summatime! From northwestern Ontario.
