I wasn't convincing you on a winch lol. They were referencing the fact I keep winning winches in raffles lol. I was just saying when I was looking to buy a winch because I didn't have one, no luck. But now that I have winches I keep winning them for free lol.

Teach me your secrets. The only thing I've ever won was a radio contest as a kid.

I think I just get my luck from my mom. She went up to Cripple Creek this weekend and sat down at the first machine for 5 minutes and won $1,100. She wins stuff all the time too.

Damn, I went to Black Hawk Friday and sat down at a blackjack table. Hit blackjack once, but lost my monies in 4 deals. Then I figured it was time for a buffet!

We started in Colorado but ended up in Utah last weekend. Unfortunately I had to cut my trip short but it was a nice start to the camping season....

Yea, I was thinking more of a just in case, while I don't expect it to pull me up a steep incline, it should be able to handle most ditches and stuck in snow or mud. Fighting rolling resistance vs elevation change, especially with a pulley

actually you'd be surprised how much it takes to pull out of snow and mud. MAYBE a ditch, but even then it depends on how deep. you'd probably burn up the winch pretty quick operating at 90%+ every pull. I'd save your $ and buy a 8000+lb winch, you can get those that will mount in a 2.5" receiver... but that's my $.02

oh and the 4,000lbs would be only on the first wrap. after that, the more you line out, the lower the pulling power

why do people keep saying this?

It's the exact opposite. The more line you have out (less on the spool) the greater your pulling power.

Think of it this way. Everytime an empty drum turns around it pulls in a certain amount of line. When the drum is full, it pulls in more line with each revolution which equals more work (like gearing)

It probably has to do with people misunderstanding the term "first wrap"

"First wrap" means the first wrap on the spool, not the first wrap to come off.

Torque would be highest with all the line on the spool. Think of a bicycle, you can go up the steepest hill when the drive gear is the smallest and the gear at the wheel is largest. The spool of a winch would be equivalent to the gear at the wheel in that example but in the case of a winch the drive gear is constant.

    Couple things

    1) No need to be a dick...
    2) The spool is most certainly not the drive gear. The winch uses a gear train to connect the winch motor to the spool which increases the torque available at the spool from what the motor is capable of producing. The drive gear is attached to the winch motor.
    3) I see your point about the pulling force being reduced as the line spools on. The torque remains constant within the gear train between the motor and spool but as the line wraps on, the pulling force is reduced.

    A) I'm sorry you think I'm a dick :pout:

2)the spool is the drive gear in your bicycle example is all I meant

*) fact of the matter is.... your winch will pull harder with all the line out than it will when it's all sucked back in and people should probably be told the truth rather than the opposite.

    here's a bunch of friendly smilies: :):D:rofl::cheers::wave:
