So I installed the temp/compass in my truck. The temp works great but my compass reads calN. I've tried re-calibrating multiple times and disconnecting both the gauge itself and the battery. Any help is welcomed and appreciated. Thanks!

Did you hook up the VSS wire?

Haha nope. What is that and where does it connect to. When originally plugged in the gauge did read se but then got locked in calibration mode.

@adio would be better suited to help on that, but if you installed the 05-08 style display there is one wire that needs to get hooked up to the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) that has a direct relation to the function of the compass.

To be fair this is only from my reading, I ended up deciding not to install the overhead console and sold it to another member.

I searched a while back on the forum here and as I recall there should be one behind the stereo that can be tapped, it is what cuts some of the function out of your stereo when it detects the truck is moving.

There should also be one in one of the connectors by the fuse panel behind the coin tray.

It's been too long since I checked to tell you the wire code, but I do recall to confirm it is the correct wire it will vary the voltage as the speed of the truck increases. Should be easy enough to detect with either a multimeter or 12v test light.

In this thread https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...assenger-use-gps-while-the-car-moving.311180/ they are snipping the VSS wire to allow temporary programming of the GPS. It is violet with a white stripe which I guess would make sense since that is the color of the wire in the connector that I posted.

I would still test it to confirm though before just hooking it up.

Haha looks like it! Install was pretty simple but it looks like I missed a step. I'll post back once I get it working right.

@nazlax10 sorry about not mentioning that VSS wire.

Like what @Up2NoGood mention I tapped the VSS wire from the back off the radio.
Bottom right 3rd pin location, violet w/white stripe wire.

For calibrating the compass it should be easy. Here's a short thread. Should be easy as just picking your location on that map and the gauge calibrates itself. If not there's a few steps in calibrating it, post #2 and #6.

Oh and by the way I may have found a way to change that display to a different color other then orange. From what I found, colors green or that cool white-ish color that's close to what the 15's has. I'll try my best to keep you guys updated.

Okay awesome. Thank you. I had to cut the connector off of the console so I have 3 wires and one of them is the vss wire. I've connected all of them separately and tried calibrating and it's still stuck on calN. Any reason for that?

I also tried calibrating by driving in circles and no luck.

Hmm what are the 3 wires you talking about?

When I calibrated mine, all I did was pick the zone. I didn't even need to put it in CAL or drive around in circles.

I'd be very interested to hear about this if you find more information. I was able to find some green displays that looked like an exact match that could be soldered in place rather than amber. Didn't find any cool white though which is what I was hoping for. I think though the clear screen that the light shines through is also amber tinted isn't it?

Make sure all this is wired up.

Did you wire up and run the ambient temp sensor(that's 2 wires-yellow and gray)?
Violet w/White stripe is for the VSS.

Ah it will be a piece of cake man. Probably the only hard part will be fishing the two wires from your engine bay into the cab.
