I came here from Florida about 8-9 years ago. I lived there my whole life prior to moving. Dude, trust me it doesn't really get that hot here.

    Same goes for Florida...

We might not have the humidity that the southeastern states get, but it still gets hot here... hot enough that it can cause problems for people leaving people and dogs in vehicles (Yes, I know those are idiots who need to be weeded out of the gene pool).

    On another note though...

I spoke with my Vet last night, and then spoke with the breeders. Turns out that the pup didn't see a vet about the eye injury (their vet makes house calls), they just watched the injury heal and made sure it didn't get infected. The conclusion of a very lengthy conversation has now turned into me making a trip down to Salem tonight to PICK HIM UP!! They've also offered to give him to me and put the $300 they were originally asking for (vet costs of breeding... insemination and C-section birth) towards future vet costs for the eye (so for those of you saying they should just find him a good home and eat the costs... well, they did)

Holy fuck this day cannot go by fast enough now LOL.

I didn't read the 80+ responses already posted.

What surgery expense other than maybe closing the eye?

What is the logic of sewing the eye shut?

One person I work with, who's very dog-involved, said that closing the eye could prevent future infections, but mostly for aesthetic purposes, and to talk with my vet about it. When I spoke with my vet last night, he had a range of possibilities that could be needed with an injured eye, ranging from topical (infection) treatments to sewing the eye shut to removing the damaged eye, possibly replacing it too (like with a glass eye). At this point, I won't know until I get him into the vet for his next round of vaccinations, hopefully on Monday or Tuesday of next week.

    Thanks for the answer.

I wouldn't subject any dog (or humane) to the risk of any surgery for a aesthetic reasons unless quality of life was adversely effected. If for health reasons, I get it.

Good luck & keep us posted.

If you ever need a dog boarder PM me and I can refer you to a wonderful lady. I call it doggie fat camp...they play all day outside with the other dogs. They are wonderful people and located rural clackamas area. Door to door service if needed and reasonable prices. Or drop off and pick in NW downtown.
I would also recommend feeding Blue Buffalo foods if you are not already set on a brand. I started feeding it to my dogs years ago...feed them less volume and they make smaller easier to pick up poos (very important). Also good for dogs that may have allergies.

Thanks CJ... I don't know what I'm going to do with Duncan (pretty sure I've settled on that name) next month when I go hunting... Don't want to get him and then after a couple weeks leave him with someone new for 10 days, but at the same time I don't know if I can take him with us... I've been told to assume there will still be snow, so it may be too cold for him to go.

He's been fed Diamond Puppy food so far, and my last dog KC ate Science Diet her entire 10 yr lifespan. Gonna talk to the vet at his first visit about food options when that time comes

I'm headed out for spring bear in 29 days. Hunting the Wallowas. I assume bear for you too?
The dog will be fine there, I was going to leave our staffie there just after getting her at 5 months old due to a family visit. Well the family visit never happened.
The dog will have more fun than you could imagine and be fine with them. I wouldn't worry too much. My dogs get excited when they see the pick-up/transport van, they f-ing love it there.

Imnaha, Snake River Unit. Spring bear, yes. I'm more concerned with him being 12 weeks old and not through all of his shots/vaccines/etc... Grey pin is where we will most likely set up camp, it's a good 30 mins or so down to the bar. Like I said before, current weather report is snowpack up there, but according to our ringleader that means we can hunt on the flats... which would be great, considering there's 5 tags to fill (including my own, but I may donate it to whomever wants it)

    Hunting.jpg

If there is snow up there still... would that lessen the number of skeeters & ticks we encounter? Last thing I want to do is take the pup up there and have him get sick from a bite[/QUOTE]
