Roofing a shed we just built. Got lazy with the nailer and shot a nail right through the good roofing where it doesn't need nails. Whats the protocol? Leave the nail? Remove it and put silicone? Or tear off the layers and replace that shingle? I appreciate the help in advance.

Pull the nail and place a square of alum. flashing under the shingle's hole.

.... Or just replace that one shingle..... you don't need to remove all the layers above it, use a flat bar to do it. How many are like that? Got pics?

Don't put silicone,.... that's half-assed, it wont last long.

Weird. My house is getting roofed as we speak. I had to leave. Sounded like they were hitting it with a 5lb sledge.

Pull the shingle and nails and replace both.

pretty much this.....you can easily replace just one shingle, just takes a little finesse with a bar

Roofing Nailers shoot full auto. So, if you set the nailer down and have your finger on the trigger a nail shoots. Not like a framing nailer that requires you to pull the trigger each time. Laid the nailer on the finished part of the roof and shot a nail into it. Eventually water will get onto the sheathing then rot. Just wondering the best way to repair before it becomes an issue.

Most framing nailers are "full auto" too unless you switch out the trigger mechanism for the safety one

I am a roofing inspector contractor for the major insurance companies in the area. Personally I would replace the shingle. Even small things like a misplaced nail makes me question. The installation of the roof. Caulking dryrots and cracks and then leaks. I have seen peoples living room ceilings nearly cave in because of a leaking nail that was under a shingle so if its ontop...

Here is how to do it: with a flat tool, a painters spatula will work, debond the tar strip at the bottom edge of the shingle and the 2 shingles directly above them and the 4 shingles directly above those 2. Remove the offending shingle by pulling the nails while holding up the other ones you debonded and carefully replace it. Then take a caulk gun and caulk the debonded shingles back down where the caulk will not be visible. And you are done!
