hey guys, so I'm doing a bilstein 5100 3" lift, with AALs in the rear. I'm trying to get new wheels and tires too. but I cant figure out all this tire math and what can fit and what cant. so i need some help.
I will be putting 255 75 r17 BFG MT onto the wheel. Will those fit a wheel thats 9" wide? or should I get an 8" wide wheel?
also, will -12mm backspace fit? from what I've read, -12mm will just make it stick out from the fender a little. how much is a little?
so what I'm looking at is getting a wheel of these dimensions, will it all work out with the tire i have listed above?
    17x8, 4.5bs, 0 offset, 6 on 5.5.
    OR
    17x9, 4.5bs, -12offset, 6 on 5.5.
    will both of these fit a 255 75 r17?

Here's mine that are a 17x8 with 0 offset. They stick out 1.5" farther than stock. The 17x9 you mentioned will stick out another inch past that. As far as the tire size, you should be fine with that. I say should because you can never really be positive.

wouldn't a 17x9 stick out only .5 inch past what your picture is? since the other half would be on the inside... right?
what size tires do you have on your 17x8?

No. Back spacing is the distance in inches from the point at which the wheel mounts to the back (hence BACK spacing). This means that the rest of the width of the tire is on the other side of it. So for an 8" wide with 4.5 BS, it sticks out 3.5". 9" wide with 4.5 BS sticks out 4.5"

i get what you're saying. so -12mm offset means it sticks out another 12mm, right? so about another half inch

Sorta. If a wheel has 0 offset, it mounts at the center line of the wheel. If you were to move the mount back in the wheel, it's negative offset, pushing the tire away from the truck. If you were to move the mount towards you, you'd get positive offset resulting in the tire being closer to the truck. That's why offset and backspacing differ based on the width of the wheel.

Just noticed you asked about tire size. I have 265/70r17 on mine, and also have a 2.5" lift.

okay. so if a wheel is 8" wide, has a offset of 0, that means the mounting surface of wheel is dead center on the wheel right? meaning the backspace would be half of the wheel, so 4". if I'm right about that last statement, why is the wheel I'm looking at 8" wide, 0 offset, and 4.5 bs?

One thing that I can promise is that 17x8 with 0 offset looks great

So I think I was forgetting to take into account the 1/2" on each side for the rim lip or something like that.

I think that that's a very skinny tire. Is that the look you're going for?

It's damn confusing, that's for sure. So back to your tire size. Are you looking for a skinny tire?

"First – add 1″ to the rim width and then divide by 2 to find the wheels center line (you have to account for the wheel flange which is why you add 1″ to the rim width). "

    Yep, there's the culprit.

i don't mind it, I'm not going to be blasting off road, just occasionally. but the 255 is wayyyy cheaper than 265 or 275.

Where are you looking at? I swear by discounttiredirect.com. Everything ships for free, and if you order wheels and tires from them they mount and balance for free too. Check out some options there before you decide on anything. My 265/70r17s were 600 to my door. Cheaper than anywhere I could find and I looked A LOT. Plus they usually have good promos running. I got a $70 visa gift card off my tires.

Tire rack will give you the mfg spec for acceptable wheel width. I think 9" is too wide for that tire, but I want be wrong. 265/70/17 is not recommended for 9" wheels with the KO2's I have. Limits my wheel choices. I wanted fuel beasts but can't.

^x2 on what he said. Every tire is different, so it's best to check. For example, my GG AT2 can run a 7-9" wheel.
