DOT only approves LED headlights that are original equipment by the manufacturer. As VE7OSR said. The PIAAs are a good example of LED Headlights that already have glare guards. Phillips make a set as well that I have heard good things about. Both are not DOT approved and cost around 250 to 300 dollars. The LEDs that I run are under 100 made OPT7 (available on Amazon), when I created the Glare Guard mod for these the PIAA and Phillips Bulbs were not yet available. For the extra money, I'd go with the PIAA or Phillips, but if you decide to go with the OPT7, message me and we can work something out. :)

Yeah, that's what mine looked like before the mod. Hope it works just as well for you as it did me.

Thanks for the post! I'm gonna try it out. Hope it works. How do the lights project out on the road?

You'll notice the difference between high and low beam far better with the mod. Before the mod, I had the lower the headlight's aim significantly. That limited the projection down the road quite a bit.

This is a great thread! Buying some soon...OP, are you selling these glare guards yet?! My father-in-law is a plumber, so I bet I can get my hands on some 1/2" copper pretty easy, but if you had some I would love to support a fellow TW member!

Edit: if not, would you be willing to take a few measurements to eliminate some of the guess work?

Thanks for the great write up! I did this mod to my RSI LEDs and it definitely helped! The RSIs already have a glare guard similar to what is in the PIAAs but it was not sufficient. You can see more scatter above the garage.

Lowes sells 1/2" x 2" long copper tubes for .80 each. Picked up two of those and hit them with the Dremel.

This is great! Glad it worked for you! Nice job adapting it to the RSIs!

Would spraying chrome paint to the inside of the new reflector help with output?

Update: This mod has fixed all of my issues. Before, the headlights were way too bright and hard to look at the truck head-on at night. Now I can look into the headlights as the truck drives towards me and I do not have to squint or turn away! The intensity is now that of any other car and not over powering, while the headlights are pointed where they should be. Very satisfied!

I finally did this tonight and WOW! what a difference. Mine aren't as pretty as yours as my bench grinder was my dremel mounted in my vice :D haha. It works like a charm, though! THANKS OP!

It's very rewarding to hear this is working for people! Thanks for the updates! Love to see some photos of the end result or before and afters if you got them. :)

BTW, I still haven't been beamed...yes, not once.

Just kidding OP....awesome mod idea! Looks like it takes care of the issue. My brother in law just put these in his 13 F250 and the glare is terrible. But he doesn't have a projector housing either.
