I bought a 98 Tacoma recently and am interested in delving into the mechanical upkeep. I have access to both a '96 Tacoma and 2000 Tacoma factory service manual. Which manual do you recommend that I use for my adventures?
Both manuals are in PDF form, however, the '96 FSM is one large document while the 2000 FSM is separated into sections and further subsections.

The 2000 will be the better of the 2.

I built my own ARB clone for the Tacoma. The Tundra bumper is just what I came up with. Its not copied directly from any other bumpers.

I'm a fabricator, so it was a fun project to see how close to the real thing I could get for the Tacoma Also, way cheaper to build my own. You are looking at $90 in steel and a 12 pack of beer to get my muffler shop to bend the hoops.

If you are going to keep your truck for a LONG time, and do most maintenance/repairs/mods yourself, like most guys in this crazy hobby, its well worth it to get a paper copy of the FSM. The PDF is much better than nothing, though. At least get the Haynes manual.

Not sure about previous years, but my '99 FSM has 3 distinct volumes, one being the electrical diagrams. Took me a few months, but I eventually found them online (Amazon and Ebay). Even used, they cost me around $200, but I've saved thousands by being able to do 95% of the work that needed to be done.

    Just my 2 cents.

Get the one for the 98 if I recall there is some differences between 98 and 2000 to cause some interesting problems

If I had a limited budget I would want the Electrical Wiring Diagrams first

With a good code reader /Scanner most codes you can find the diagnostics searching online

Until you learn the most common ones.
