Putting together a 1/24 crawler using old parts and a new chassis. The glue has dried on the last link and it's a roller. Body panels, extended drive shafts, and electronics left to go.

I used some m2 threaded rod to figure out link lengths and then used .062" stainless wire to make the smooth links. I need to disassemble the whole thing and paint as well as trim up the Gorilla Glue used on the links. Micros are a lot cheaper......

Found a couple pics of one of my very first crawlers, it was based off a pti Goliath, used an rc10 b4 trans. Probably built about 14 years ago when Crawling was ruled by tamiya based builds like clod busters, tlt1's, and bruisers.

Just finished up the panels 20 minutes ago. Looks good at a few paces away.

Gave the Spawn a new paint job. It was so much fun peeling the Plastidip off that I had my boy do it. Took it out over the weekend and already scuffed it up some. :) Dad made me an antenna with some old piano wire and a spring which looks and acts like a real antenna. I like it a lot!
    spawn.jpg
    And then there's dad's truck...
He has modified his skid plate so that it hinges and the axles can move a bit more. Sealed the tires, put some tire slime in them and uses a syringe to increase/decrease air pressure. Truck is a little heavy now and he's going to try to put it on a diet as his motor got pretty hot during his last run. Oh, and he's running my old wraith shocks now. Stretched the scx10 springs to fit. They look ugly but work all right. He gives me pretty good competition when it comes to climbing things.

Gave him a box of 300 LED lights in assorted colors and he went a bit overboard. Headlights, taillights, amber running lights, a light in the cab and cab lights on the top. Even has relays in there to give him lights in reverse (I need to get pictures of it all lit up). Lights and wires are all glued to the body, hence the ring terminals. My mom says he does something to it nearly every day. He really wants to widen the axles some and was asking about fitting axles from my wraith on his. How costly is that?

That's hilarious that your dad is gung ho like that. Good stuff right there. Whats the ring terminals? Is it a contact point for the power to the LEDs? Cause that's pretty slick if it is.

Putting the bigger ar60 axles on isn't that bad. I had a set on my scx10 chassis. You can use some really bent up links to get around the drive shaft or go outboard like I did.

    Here's an old pic.

One I saved of an extremely bent link to clear with a conventional setup.

Here's a Wraith skid I put on it just this morning. It's roughly 1" wider. So I had to bend the frame rails a little forward and aft of the skid to get the braces back in.

I just discovered the ease of making a solid link.

3/16" stainless rod, cordless drill, ball ends(I used RPM this time) and a m4 die. You could use the SAE equivalent if you have one.

Make a link to base all the measurements off. Chuck rod and cut it with the hacksaw while spinning the rod. Easy. Then drill it down into the die until it's bottomed out. One side is done. Then do the other. Easy peasy.

I made this draglink in about 15 minutes start to finish.

That is exactly what they are for. He's a very clever dude who loves to tinker. :)

Thanks for the info. Great stuff! I never thought about the links being a problem. The outboard solution is a great idea. Not sure when he will want to do this, but I wanted to get a plan together. I would buy the stuff for him, but he gets mad when I do that now. Says I've spent too much on him already...

A set of ar60s ready to mount up go for about $130ish on fleaBay. Get some ball ends, stainless rod, and a tap/die set then let him get after it.

Mmmm. Untampered Honcho. Wheel it for a while before you start wrenching. It's fairly capable in stock form. Cut the bump stops off the rear shocks and wheel it. In the RTR parts trees there's enough to 4 link the front.

Thanks for the tip. It is the RTR version with the only mod so far to be the aluminum 4 links front and rear. Thinking about water-proofing it. The T-Maxx doesn't see much use either. It's like 15 years old and only like 10 uses.
