Is it just me or if you want to make serious power a swap seems to be the way to go, dollar for bang? I mean a built and stroked URD block goes for like 15k, heads another 5? and then like another 10k to get boost, exhaust, an other peripherals. If you wanna make serious power thats over 30k!!!! A crate motor making similar power probably is only 10? If you spend another 10 to swap it seems to me your still 10 better off?

That has $5k in a stroker crank and sleeves alone.

Budget built, is much less. Turbo, and turn up the boost.

But I mean if you want to make any real power your gonna have to build the bottom half. Lets say you don't get stroker or sleaved your still looking at (I'm gussing because it doesn't look like URD has those prices on their webstie anymore) 7 for the block, 3 for heads, and 5 for boost.... Thats still 15 to make the power of a 6k crate motor. Spend 4k on a trans and new drive shafts, and you still have 5k to bring it all together. Also, opposed to the already built engine you have room for growth where the other set up is pretty much maxed out. If you wanted to build a stroker or something then you'd have to pretty much start from scratch where 1k spent on a crate motor you can make 100 hp potentially. IDK. I just think if you want any serious power it doesn't make too much sense to build 1gr-fe's. That being said, I have no clue as to how hard it would be to make the factory gauges and all sorts of other stuff like that function. I wouldn't want to have to cut them out and mount different gauges and stuff like a race car for my dd.

Edit: I just noticed your signature. Did you need to build the bottom end for that? What all did you end up doing. I'm probably gonna read that thread now.

Edit 2: So you did rods, pistons, & studs? Bought a new block? The turbo looks like its back by the fuel tank? I couldn't really tell the position. Much lag being that far away? Nice photos on the thread.

Rods can be had for $500 - 2000, head studs $350, head gaskets $200, pistons $800-1200. Then your pretty much done.

Like all engine builds, the sky is the limit. That dyno back in the day was just that. Bought the block for $1200, since I didn't have a DD.

Now that I do have a spare car, I don't mind the down time to build the installed engine. Which would equate to less invested.

I don't know where you are getting the $3k for heads? Springs and titanium retainers is only ~$1000. Valves were never upgraded on the old engine, or the new big bore engine. Just springs and retainers.

With those few mods, the 1gr will easily be capable.of 600 whp. Practically there with my current 4.17L engine, right now. Just need to turn the boost up a tad more. ;)

I was counting for cams, porting, new values, springs. That's not to bad ~5 for the block and then ~5 for boost. I guess you'd be pressed to do an engine swap for less and is definitely more straight forward.

Also, IDK why I thought the turbo was by the fuel tank. I couldn't really tell where. I saw one photo I thought was around there but again wasn't sure, and then you said something about it being out back or something. I have heard of setups like that but it sounded real goophy.

Hell, if @COMAtized99 could make a 4.7 fit in his first gen and run, I don't see why the bigger 2nd gen couldn't fit it. I say go for it. Plus you can always supercharge the 4.7 for even more power.

This honestly shouldn't be too hard considering Toyota made some 4 runners with a V8.
I work with a woman who has one with a TRD dual exhaust and it sounds awesome both because of the sound and because they look like V6 SUVs
