Hey, I was wondering what you guys use to secure your dogs in the bed of the truck? I made the mistake of letting my dog in the back of the cab and spent 1hr vacuuming his hair off of the seats and the back of the front seats. I feel its safer for him back there, but when I go camping, I put him in the bed so he can enjoy fresh air once we get off any main roads, but I am afraid that if he sees a rabbit or something he might jump out of the bed.

My dog is old she won't go anywhere but a harness and a double leash secures at opposite sides of the bed will make sure your pup won't jump out.

Dont mean to be rude but that's your opinion. My dog is happiest in the bed. You're saying my dog shouldn't be happy? He gets tethered and now with the topper there's no way for him to get out. I get your comment, but please dont lump all dog owners into the same boat of not caring for their best friends well being.

A small handful of select mods.
Colorado requires a kennel or cage secured to the bed now to keep them safe in the bed. Might be something to consider. It's up to you. Me personally my GSD's ride in the back seat. I don't mind the hair.

My lab of 10 years, passed away last year. He was the Taco's true owner. I just chauffeured.

    In dad's '83 Hi-lux...

My new lab pup, in the pool, about to become the Taco's new owner with a desert road trip coming up...

so just out of curiosity and at risk of regretting asking this but.....why don't dogs belong in the bed? He gets to ride in the bed when Im on dirt roads which means I am not going very fast. Its not like Im driving down the highway with him in the bed.

oh and your seat cover idea......im not putting seat covers on my front seats as they have airbags in them. That seems sort of counter productive to cover airbags?

I put my dog up front on longer road trips or going faster on highways, but putting around locally in beautiful weather the dude rides in back. He gets to sniff and check out the scenery, and I don't have to 'f' with towels, sheets and hair EVERYWHERE.

I'm not trying to be rude, but Colorado is also the state that the capital city banned pit bulls and the state passed a law against high capacity magazines for toys such as guns. They also passed a law to make marijuana use legal. I'm not putting much stock in any law from that state.

I didn't mean for this thread to get off topic, I just had a question. sorry.

Dogs riding unsecured in the bed can jump out or be ejected from the bed (acceleration, hard braking, big bump). Your pup enjoys sniffing but with speed comes the chance he will end up with dust/dirt/debris/bugs in his eyes-the same is true if he's hanging his head out the window.

It doesn't take much for a dog to bail at a stop sign either. And there's not a whole lot you can do about it while you are driving-never mind that for many of us, it's a long way down.

These are the reasons Riley rides in the back seat. And he probably should be secure there too (becomes a 110# projectile in an accident).
