What to do to my Tacoma?

Specially when you're talking Canadian dollars

 

Caveats: I agree with Taczilla on a logical level. He's absolutely right.

Problem is, 'projects' tend to take on a life of their own, that defies logic. The key is to avoid the psychological trap of throwing money into a bottomless pit, with no end-results achieved.

I'm not against modifying the hell out of your vehicle.. whatever that vehicle may be. If you are happy with it, plan to keep it, go nuts - but for jebus sake, do it on a project plan basis.. that way you know whether to do the project, or cut bait, and buy what you should have in the first place, or have evolved to needing. The 5-lug does have it's limitations.

Obviously, i'm not one who is going to follow Taczilla's sage advice .. but i also knew i was keeping this for minimum of a decade, and hopefully longer, as a daily driver. When i started throwing cash into the seemingly bottomless pit, I knew where my financial liability ended, along with the end-goal. It was logical to proceed forward, because the Tacoma by itself was a suitable vehicle for my needs, it's (mostly) paid for, and it had realistic potential to meet my particular (peculiar?) future needs, given a plan to follow.
What i have now, i am very happy with, end of 'project'. If i had gone the long run to what i wanted by trading in the base 5-lug and doing the desired mods to a TRD DCLB4X4LMAO instead, that would not have worked out all that well, financially. Wants are different from Needs, in that my now modded up Tacoma 5-lug is all that i really need, for the foreseeable future.

No regrets whatsoever, trying to turn my sow's ear into a silk purse.. FWIW. Individual preferences, and desired results may vary .. as in any project situation.

If you are planning on keeping the vehicle for just a couple years, I wouldn't bother doing much to it. Just give 'er, and add go-juice. I did that for 4 years with my 5-lug, before i decided it was a keeper - having explored options and evaluated alternatives, first.

I know we've got a few members here that have gone the 5-lug LT route - they are more or less inactive, but they've done it. I'm fairly certain i've read a build thread or two, in the past. Assuming i'd even have the need for LT, I personally don't think i'd use the 5-lug as a base for that. In my mind, the 5-lug's primary ecosystem is the street, no matter how much screwing around you do with it... I'd be eyeballing pre-runners as a project base, instead.

JMHO, and not my project, not my money, not my truck. Do what makes you happy, in the end.

 

Five lug Tacomas are an interesting sub group within the Tacoma line up, a sub group that now will die a very slow, but inevitable death.

We are 2WD trucks that are significantly lower than even Pre-Runners. We are geared poorly for anything past a 30 inch tire, and our suspension setup is different enough from our counterparts that we now only have two (essentially one) type of lift available. And guess what....it's a spacer lift.

That being said:

If you don't really want to off-road, and just want a fun truck, this is where we excel. Our trucks are cheaper than any other Tacoma on the market (I purchased mine for $20,000 WITH a dealer undercoat job, brand new plates, registration, etc. out the door). What does this mean? More money for fun.

Want a cool sounding exhaust? You can have that.

Want slightly bigger tires? 5 Lugs can do that too.

Want to lift your truck but don't wanna off road? We got it.

Want to have a reliable truck that you can have fun with? Say no more.


It all depends on what you want and where you want to take it. Are our options more limited than our 6 lug friends? Absolutely. Do we have no options? Absolutely not. Creativity has a way of presenting itself whether ou have 4, 5, 6, or 8 lug nuts. Only you can decide whether the truck is worth it or not to do what YOU want.

One of the best things about the 5 lugs is the unmolested, no flares fenders.
I would say leave them alone but that's me.

Probably not your thing but just an idea. I love lifted trucks and mini trucks

I'm not bashing the truck. It is built for a purpose, and that would be a low cost, light duty, and reliable delivery vehicle.

Apparently he is 'about to buy' and then spend a bunch of money to lift it. To just buy the next step up would make more economic sense.
