Moving to Maui next month and I don't have a front plate mounted. Is this OK on Maui or am I going to get ticketed?

it doesn't matter island to island, front plate supposed to be present. now whether it's mounted to the factory bumper holes or just zipped tied, I'm not sure. I think some guys here have zipped tied their plates to their front armor. you can get pulled over for no plates, but I don't know if they would pull you over for just plates... you gotta be doing something else dumb, like no seatbelt or speeding, then you'll probably get tagged for it.

I dunno if the maui cops are more picky, so hopefully some of the maui guys can help you out with specifics...

If you are looking for a more permanent solution, I sell plate brackets. Follow the link in my signature below. I have sold one to a TW member in Hawaii.

I still have the stock bracket that I pulled off, so I can use that if I have to. I also have a mustang that has never had the front bumper drilled - that's the bigger problem. CA requires a front plate but I haven't run one in years on any of my cars and none of the cops seem to care unless you're being a dick. I just didn't know if the cops there enforce it or not.

@Daytona Coupe - meaning you don't need to run it until those 10 minutes once a year when you need to have it "mounted" for your safety inspection. that's exactly why I have the Sly Brackets... pop on for safety, pop um off and behind my backseats til next year. haha

Got pulled over for no front plate but the officer just gave me a warning. It was at 2am when there was nothing else to do.

Ok, I'm assuming I'll have to have an initial inspection when I arrive so I'll plan on having a way to mount them on both vehicles. After that, I'll see what I can do. I guess I'll keep my eyes peeled for the number of cars driving around with no front plate when I'm there.
    Thanks guys.

I got pulled over for no front plates, cop told me just put it between the windshield and my dash board. Main thing it's visible and you're all good.

Wonder if HPD would be as lenient?

Maybe I should just put it back on. I already have holes in the Taco bumper so it s not a big deal I guess.
My other car has never been drilled, so I hate to put holes in that one. Maybe I could put it on with double sided foam tape or something.

Do they write tickets for exhaust too? I have the stock one on the taco but my Mustang has a Bassani cat back on it.

Got busted for that…along with not even having it around.

imo makes the vehicle look cleaner. The laws in Hawaii to pass the safety inspection is that the front license plate must be visible from both front and back of the vehicle and secured to the stock location and if not, on the bumper. From doing safety checks, secured doesnt mean it has to be bolted. Zip tie that up, and/or tape it so it doesnt swing, then after your new pmvi sticker is placed upon your rear of the vehicle, you can go ahead and rip off the front plate. Heres the actual hawaii revised statues…

"(b) Upon an original registration the director of finance shall fix, and shall charge to the owner, a fee equal to the cost of the number plate and tag or emblem plus the administrative cost of furnishing the plate and tag or emblem and effecting the registration. Upon the issuance of a new series of number plates as determined by the directors of finance of each county through majority consent, the director of finance shall charge the owner a fee equal to the costs of the number plate plus the administrative cost of furnishing the plates. Upon issuing a tag or emblem, the director of finance shall charge the owner a fee of 50 cents. The owner shall securely fasten the number plates on the vehicle, one on the front and the other on the rear, at a location provided by the manufacturer or in the absence of such a location upon the bumpers of the vehicle and in conformance with section 291-31, in such a manner as to prevent the plates from swinging. Number plates shall at all times be displayed entirely unobscured and be kept reasonably clean. In the case of trailers, semitrailers, or motorcycles, one plate shall be used and it shall be fastened to the rear thereof at a location provided by the manufacturer or in the absence of such a location at the rear thereof, and in the case of motorcycles in conformance with section 291-31." http://codes.lp.findlaw.com/histatutes/1/14/249/249-7
hrs 291-31 basically is that the rear license plate must be illuminated/have a light shining on it. you need that to pass a safety check(pmvi-periodic motor vehicle inspection). Lights have to be on 30 minutes before sunrise and 30 after sunset…
the laws are kinda vague here and can be used to your advantage to fight it. Safety check laws and laws that cops go by can also be different. Like exhaust…pmvi inspectors are supposed to have a decibel meter and exhaust cant exceed 98db, iirc. Cops only can gauge it from 50 ft behind. but how the laws are in hawaii its pretty much not supposed to modify from stock application, but they can go ahead and suck my nuts. If I ever am allowed to do safety checks again, im gonna let shit fly…duct tape your rust, small kine hide that windshield crack, tape up these stupid fender flares…theres much more hacked up hooptys out there so I hope ur not that guy.

btw, that mustang must sound bad ass. my cousin had a mustang with bassani exhaust and that thing sounded action. I never got to see em clock it since the track on oahu closed down around that time, but I can tell you it did make me want to do headers and the bassani x pipe to the 302 in my f150…just cause I loved that sound.
