So my bud and I are already making a checklist for a diesel swap project on my Taco. The swap will replace the engine with a 4BTA, a nv4500 4wd transmission, and adding 4wd essentials. I can fabricate the mounting brakets and shit like that, but my only concern and problem as of now is the ECU. Replacing the engine with an all mechanical engine and with a manual tranny and having no spark plugs will cause problems if i cant somehow remove the programming for those sections or get some sort of simulators to keep the computer happy. Any help from the ECU nerds?

To get a meaningful response you should add more info on what it's going into (1st, 2nd, or 3rd gen with year). Sounds like a fun project. 4BTA's are a good engine for transplants. Is it a rotary or inline pump engine? If I were doing the swap, I'd go with aftermarket gauges, etc and get rid of all electronic controls. On my '13, it appears all of the systems are intertwined like abs, traction control, stability, etc... I'm not sure how any of these systems would reliably function without all of the expected inputs. Post pictures please...

The engine i want is an inline 4 diesel. My current truck is a 2006 (2nd gen) prerunner with the 4.0 v6. And how would i rig up aftermarket guages?

You sure you aren't in over your head lol? I'd use the ecu from the donor motor

Maybe only about 1% of the people who talk about a diesel swap actual end up doing it. So you going to talk about or be about it?

Well, if i knew the answers to my few questions and money was an endless supply then it'd be done. But i have to save up money to drop on parts from wreck yards and figure out how to work around a computer and then i can "be about it". Forgive me for being rude, but i asked for technical advice, not a childish remark that is getting this topic nowhere

What year 4BTA will you be using? I know it's an inline 4 but is the injection pump mechanical or electronic? For aftermarket gauges, I'd go right from the sensors on the engine to the gauges and use as little of the factory wiring as possible to allow me to bypass the ecu. You don't live in an area that does emissions tests, do you? If so, this project is dead from the get go if you want to drive it on the street. I don't want to sound like a jerk but from your questions and answers it seems like you're way over your head. Does the tranny have a mechanical speedo drive or VSS socket or none at all? That would need to be known to pick the right speedometer, etc...

I don't know about 2nd gen, but I just unplugged my engine from the ecu and it was done. The engine is its own system. That's the beauty of a p pump engine.

That is awesome! Did you use the nv4500 tranny or the Tacoma tranny?

NV4500. A stock Toyota tranny would blow to pieces. Hell a stock NV4500 needs work to hold some torque.

Rat Products, is that a 6bt? I didn't think you could fit that in a tacoma. And is just unplugging your engine and leaving your wires there is treating you ok? I understand it'll function, but the dash lights would bug me
