Thoughts? I've been looking at the site and seen different conclusions. I do not want to drill or modify my bed. Don't know if you need to with either of these. Both of these look nice and I like that you can flip up the g4 from front or back and its lockable. Comments?

What are you driving? I believe the G4 does require minor drilling to the tailgate if you don't have a tailgate lock.

I have the G4 and there's no drilling required. Had it for about 3 weeks now and absolutely love it. Love that it opens near the cab and the tailgate and also that it has it's own lock as well. Well worth the money IMHOtonneau cover.jpg

You didn't have to drill the tailgate to mount the piece that locks the cover down? I am looking at the G4 but am worried about the install? And how water resistant is it?

Didn't have to drill into the tailgate at all. You have to remove a screw that is already there and use it with the G4 but no drilling a new hole anywhere. The rest of the pieces mount right onto the bed rails. I've found it to be extremely water resistant. I've pressure washed it from close distances and had it sitting out in torrential downpours. The only water leak (and this was very minor) was at the corner behind the driver's side passenger doot. Easily fixed by using a piece of the tailgate seal that comes with the G4. Btw, I haven't even had to use that on my tailgate. May do it when winter comes though. Hope this helps and good luck.

Helps a lot thanks. Did you install the cover yourself? How was it (I've heard mixed feelings)? Since you can't fold it up all the way, do you find this a problem? I know you have to take it off to use 100% of the bed, which is why I was gonna put thumb screws or knob bolts at the top for easy removal.

I'm just worried about being able to install this by myself. I've watched the install video and it's very descriptive. I stopped by an installation place last night and the leak you mention is easily fixed by removing the bulkhead cap and putting a piece of rubber/gasket on both ends then put the cap back on.

    Thanks.

I had a neighbor fellow Tacoma owner give me a hand with putting it on. Took us a little while to get it on but it was more about getting one side done and then adjusting the other side. Just back and forth on both sides until it was set. As far as having problems hauling things, I haven't run into anything yet where the cover needed to come off. Guess I'll cross that bridge when the truck drives up to it. Even if that becomes a problem, I'll still go with the G4 again cause I love it that much. I also recommend using 303 protestant when you clean it. I was using and had several other people chime in saying that they used it and said it was the best for it.

Hope you like it as much as I like mine. Don't forget to use the coupon code "TW16" at checkout. Knocks the price down a little and that means more money for other stuff to do to the truck

I know you've already made up your mind, but you won't be disappointed with the G4. I had one on my F150 and it was a great cover; but yes, the install was a real pain. The most important thing I found was to make sure that everything is totally square before tightening it down. You may think that as long as it's sitting on all 4 rails, it'll work, but it doesn't. It took me several hours (spread over different days) to get it just perfect, but when it was, it was almost 100% leak proof.

I kinda plan having to do that. I have watched a good video on the install for a tacoma and it was pretty good and very informative. Did anyone put a bead of silicone on the side rails before mounting them to give it some additional weatherproofing? I am thinking about doing it even though it doesn't call out for it.

Sparty, can you post the video for the install? I am about to pull the trigger on a bed cover for my 2014 PreRunner. The G4 has always been high on my list for the folding cover, because of the lock and the fact that you can access the front and back of the cover. You havent had any issues with waterproofing have you?

During my installation I discovered that the video isn't 100% accurate(it's for a long bed). However, between the video and the directions the install wasn't as bad as I thought. It's not 100% waterprooof but not bad at all. I added some rubber gasketing at the top of the bed and around the tailgate, now there is only two small areas that water drips in but it cool. I've it through many car washes and power washes and not much water gets in.

    I'm really happy.

Hey there... just bought me a 2017 Taco dbl cab. Reading this post, and it's got me leaning toward getting a G4... do you still like it? Any suggestions/tips on installing & maintaining it? Also, have you had to remove it to get full access to the bed?... find it very difficult to do?

Yes I still like it. I use Aerospace 303 for cleaning. Haven't had to remove it yet, but it's only 4 bolts (easy). Be patient on installing, keep bolts all finger tight until it's aligned properly then tighten all down.

Make sure you add some sort of rubber/neoprene gasket on the head of the bed and the tailgate all around it. I used some silicone at the front end where the rails all meet. All you have to do is get in the bed and close it then look for any light shining in.

Do you still have access to the bed rails? Like if i tried to use the clips that come with the truck would it interfere with the bed cover?

Yes you do, which is one of the reasons I bought this one. You can also still use your bed extender if you have one.
