Pretty much stock with some crap welded to it.
hey guys, so I've had my truck for about 3 years now, and ever since I've owned my truck I've noticed something kind of odd with the supercharger, first alittle background, 2002 manual Tacoma with 104k miles I bought the truck with the blower on it with a urd 2.2 pulley and no other fuel mods orherwise. So when I'm driving the truck and I'm going up a pretty steep road, either up the canyon or a big steep highway, I'll sometimes get a raspy noise coming from the supercharger. It's usually when I'm in between gears like it's too fast for 3rd but alittle slow for 4th. When I drive the truck around town the supercharger always sounds fine, I'm just wondering if anyone has heard of anything similar, any more info would be awesome as I'm not at all familiar with superchargers. Thanks guys.

Probably pinging because you are using no fuel mods AND a 2.2 pulley....bad idea. Get the 7th injector or put the stock pulley back on otherwise you are gonna crack the heads and blow your headgasket

I get the same sound under the same conditions (going up a hill, low RPM high gear). It's definitely not pinging, I'm very familiar with what that sounds like. That's more like marbles rattling around inside of a can. This is kind of a raspy growl that almost sounds like road noise from A/T tires.

As far as I can tell, it's normal. My supercharger has less than 30k miles on it and works just fine. I wouldn't worry about it unless it sounds like the one does in this video...Bad supercharger sound

No no no so yeah it would be low rpm going up a hill so it's putting a lot of stress on it, it goes away once the truck build up its momentum in the higher Rpms then I get the normal sound and power back. I don't get any sound like that on revving it or any other time driving it.

So this is normal? @anthony250f would a 7th injector kit solve this? I have a stock pulley on it now. And the air box is stock with a snorkel. I'm not trying to race the truck. And I'm totally content with the performance of the truck.

Does it sound like marbles in a jar? That's the pinging and yes it is normal. Because it's too lean

Exactly it's like a rattle noise similar to a pining cracky noise like its struggling to go. If that makes sense, am I ok to keep it stock? Or is the 7th the only way to keep it reliable @anthony250f

I would def go with the 7th. That will make the truck run much better.my 7th starts adding fuel at 1psi of boost

If you don't wanna spend the money I would put the stock pulley back on and see if it still happens

Oh yeah if you're running the smaller pulley you should be running the 7th inj kit for sure. It's highly recommended even with the stock pulley. I need to get the kit myself, I ping like a motherf***er at high gear/low RPM.

What kind of spark plugs are you running? It's recommended you run at least 2 (?) steps colder plugs over the stock copper ones. Spark knock sounds a lot like pre-detonation (pinging) and that could help get rid of it.

id have to order a stock pulley, I'll do that and see if it helps, I realized I changed the urd tensioner pulley not the urd pulley on the charger, i hope that fixes it. I can't believe the po even put it on, I didn't even think that would cause the problem

I'm not sure what plugs are in there, I haven't changed then since owning the truck, I'm Genna order a stock sc pulley tomorrow and hopefully that helps.

These are the ones that Toyota and others on TW say to run with the 3.4l TRD supercharger

    Denso PTR24-35040

I just ordered them, should be in this week and hopefully I can get them put on soon. I'll report back and see if it helps with some of the pinging and overall performance of the s/c. It's a relatively inexpensive way to insure the s/c is running at it's best.

They're much cheaper to order through Amazon too, btw.

I'll order those as well. U think putting the stock pulley will help as well?? I'm stressed! I can't believe I didn't even think about that pulley being the problem..

I can't really speak to the pulley issue as I've never run anything but the stock one. But I do know that the 7th injector is highly recommended for the TRD s/c when it's stock, let alone when it's pumping out even more boost with an upgraded pulley system. I think it would be a safe bet to put the stock one back on when you can until you can get the 7th inj kit
