Yeah in many ways the gen 3 Tacoma is step back. You can get better MPG than a gen 2 if you baby the throttle and are okay accelerating slowly outside of the torque band. You think Toyota would have sensed the slew of new entries coming into the mid-size market and would have done something other than grab the sluggish 3.5 from the Lexus/Toyota parts bin.
I get that Toyota has their hands somewhat tied because of the EPA but c'mon, Toyota sells more Tacomas than Tundras. Toyota has always been known for their small trucks. Tacoma should get the most focus, not just half-assed redesign. I am sure the next-gen Tundra will have tons of power AND great MPG. Mid-size trucks get the shaft.

Well, I said "most." Which is different from "all." Personally, I would put the low fluid, seat complaints, shifting oddness, and other items that are quickly corrected in the minor or nit-picky category (hey, you had a chance to test drive it). I would put the blown engine case in the major category, and we'll never know what really caused that. My bet is that it was something odd, like a piece of a nitrile glove in the oil pan that got stuck to the oil pickup, not a common occurrence nor an inherent design flaw.

So has the OP posted again at all??? I think this guy is a troll trying to see how much ruckus he can stir up. If he's really a service writer at a Toyota dealership he should be first in line for all the fixes and you would think his own dealership would listen to his problems.

My leaf springs don't squeek and they haven't broken in spite of my best efforts to hit bumps and potholes on unpaved roads. I feel left out

When I say net picky I'm meaning by some road noise or minor wind noise on the freeway while travelling at 75 mph. Dumb stuff like that. They are a cheaper vehicle so they will not be a quiet like a Mercedes Benz or a Cadillac.

That's what I mean by the OP is a troll. If he works at a dealership and if he was a good TW member he would not be complaining, he would be giving all of us important TSB info.

The U.S. Military wants to test the Toyota Land Cruiser, Toyota Hilux, and Ford Ranger as war vehicles.

These are vehicles that people depend their lives on. A comfort truck with no low end torque that struggles up mountain passes with a small load isn't even considered.

U.S. Military Will Test Toyota Land Cruiser, Hilux And Ford Ranger as war vehicles:

Just double checking for those who woke up with their grumpy pants on this morning, this IS a forum right? This is a forum where you discuss the things you like and don't like about your particular vehicle right? or is Hillary already POTUS and I wasn't informed?

I don't think OP is trolling but it doesn't help his case that majority of 3rd gen posts are in the form of whining

The truck has plenty of power.... it's just a bit higher up in the rpm band. Off idle and off cruising rpms, my 2002 S10 had more grunt.... get it up in the rpm band and that's where the power is. Unfortunately, I don't drive there much. I keep the rpms kinda low..... speaking of the ECU tries to keep the rpms there too in order to make better gas mileage. That's also why it's a bit shift happy. Speaking of gas mileage, this truck does well at speeds 65mph and less. At 70mph, I get about 17.5mpg. If I can keep at or below below 60mph, 22mpg is doable even after changing to a heavier tire. 24mpg was possible before. The other thing that really kills mileage is how you drive it. Play a little game with that mpg meter and try to keep it pegged up, as your driving habits change, mpgs will get better.

This truck has a few quirks that I wasn't used to, but overall, I'm pretty happy with it.

Just had a customer come in and I quote "Feels like my transmission needs liposuction, gets off the line like a fat guy trying to sprint" not the best analogy, but nevertheless I sent him on his way and told him to stop being so "nit picky"

LOL jk GTFO to whoever said that.
