I know you bought it from a Toyota dealer that way, but I don't know if that configuration was ever tested by Toyota or the EPA since it's different than "standard" packages.

The tires on the Tacoma appear to be selected for low rolling resistance and light weight to improve gas mileage. The tires you have seem more aggressive than anything on the standard Tacoma packages. I wonder if the gulf-states folks can do whatever they want and not worry about the effect on gas mileage. Not making a statement, I really don't know how it works in that area but I think it's different than most of the rest of the country.

Bummer, sorry to hear about your mpg. I have been getting 19-20 average (I fill up at 1/2 tank) and have been seeing 21-22 on trips to work and back (7.6 miles)

How much reading did you do here before you figured out that you had issues with loose u-bolts, dry u-joints, squeeks and transmission probs? Next you'll have wind noise, vibrations and a howling differential.

I bet it was the best vehicle you ever owned, then you found TacomaWorld.

Toyota Sport Series is a Gulf States only thing.... Wheels, Tires, Steps, Stickers Floor Matts...

As far as your tire/wheel package, if they are heavier they could cost you a little bit of MPGs. I've put over 7000 miles on my truck and have figured out a few things about gas mileage:

    1. I put on General AT2s in the same size tire as the offroad, which is heavier, and lost a couple of MPGs.
    2. Driving 70mph+ really hurts mpgs. 65mph and lower really helps. This thing loves 55-60mph. I can get 22mpg working it... even with the heavier tires.
    3. Stop/Go hurts mpgs, switch your display to the mileage screen and try to keep that blue bar pegged high, you will get a feel for how driving affects mpgs.

    Your truck...
I'd wait until at least 1,000 miles after having any memory reset or TSB reflash...looks like you've had both done.

Hate to break it to you, but 5 mpg is just about exactly what the AIR CONDITIONER will cost you.

Just curious as to what you are getting with the 6" lift? Also what tires are you running?

Not me. I'm afraid the motor will blow up and leave me $25K+ pissed away and without transportation. Damn sure don't want to ride the Mass Transit bus.

I agree gas mileage is not really great on these especially for the step down in motor and transmisson combo from the previous gen. Don't believe the HYPE. However I think the new transmission software update could help as the trans seems to hold 6th Gear better now on highway. Time will tell though...I certainly don't expect any major improvement from 18 to 19mpg

While I couldn't possibly care less about Mpg's, I do feel ya on the rest. I love my truck but am disappointed in the lack of quality control and some of the problems that aren't up to Toyota standards.
I'm hoping it will all work out in the end .

I took our truck on a 400 mile round trip down to St.Louis over the weekend... stock double cab trd offroad. 3 adults and two 12 yo kids. The truck wasn't doing great, roughly 17mpg at 75+ mph... I was upset by the whole thing really, but I know if I drive the speed limit at 70-72 mph I can get better fuel economy.

At the end of the day, this truck just is not a full size truck with a 8 speed transmission and cylinder shut off technology.

I bought in to the Toyota way of life also, those buddies of mine that had them before me continue to have them and will have them long after I pass mine off to the next owner. Im going to try very hard to hang on to mine for as long as I can, I know Toyota will take care of its buyers if problems continue.

When I first picked up my truck I was getting 18/19mpg. Now 10,000 miles I try to drive very conservative and the best I am getting is 16mpg.
