Here's the official info provided via toyota to our fluid capacity info for an 05 4.0

    20160726_073149.jpg

And why is it so many of you 2015 guys have been changing your own oil? Did you not get 2 years or 25k free maintenance? Or did you guys just already out drive the freebies?

I'm rolling over 35k this week and finagled the dealer into giving me 2 more oil changes.

I out drove the freebies in one year! I can never tell where the oil is on my dipstick no many how many times I pull it out and wipe the oil off and then try again. I always just put a little more than 5 quarts not sure of exact amount since the manual says 5.5 I just do my best guesstimate.

Yep. I just changed, rolled the truck into the garage fully hot, dropped the oil and pulled old filter and then went to have a sandwich so it drained as much as it could. Added the 5 qt Mobil1 jug. Not even half way down to the low dot. Unless your truck is using oil, there's no reason to make sure it's full right to the top dot. I absolutely hate to have my oil overfilled. I've brought it home and drained a little after having someone else change it and overfill because they just blindly put in 5.5. Would way rather have it a smidge below the full dot than a smidge above it. And would rather not have to buy a 5 and a quart then keep track of the half quart for 6 months until the next change.

I thought the tow package oil cooler was for the trans only. There's an engine oil cooler with it too?

Yes all v6's with tow pkg have an engine oil cooler. Two lines connect at oil filter base.
The v6 listed above stating 4.8 is the X-Runner. Chart is incorrect in what is labeled "4.0L engine, 4wd" should be 4wd and PreRunner. the X-runner has a different oil pan while 4wd and Pre-Runner have the same (deeper) pan.

I would rather change my own oil, its more of a pain to let the dealer do it even though it would be free.

5qts puts just under top mark with YZZD3 filter. So to make life easy I use 5qts. That's with factory tow package as well.

I could be wrong, but I believe it's both the tranny and engine oil that get coolers. Tow package from what I remember is engine oil cooler, trans fluid cooler, high output alternator, hitch, and 7-pin connector.

Do you pull the stick and check when you're done?

After ARB1977 posted about his 6 quarts it got me thinking; how many people just pour in the amount that the manual (or TacoWerld or whatever) says is the capacity and then call it done and shut the hood? I was taught how to do oil changes by my dad, and the last thing to do was always to pull the stick and see what the engine actually got.

Who checks after and who doesn't? And why?

Try this... scuff the dip stick area between the 2 marks with some sandpaper to etch it. When checking the level remove the stick and wait around 10 minutes before reinserting... lets the oil you dragged up the tube with the stick time to drain back down.

The first change in my 15' I did not check and put 5.5qt in. After starting and checking it was a 1/4" above the top mark. 5.5 is what I always put in my 03' 3.4l. I should have started with 5qt and adjust if needed on the 4.0l.

When I bought my 06, I checked the dipstick after adding 5 qts and it was between the marks and closer to full. Waited until the day after to check it. Closed the hood and been using 5 qts for 9 years...

Just pull out, wipe off and wait a few minutes. Insert and will be easily readable.

    5.25 here.
Oil/filter change, start and check to ensure there's no random leaks, let settle and check the dipstick.
