My wife's 2008 Lexus takes 6.7 qts. I pretty much change both oils at the same time so its convenient to split 2 six packs of oil, kind of rounding each to like 6.6 and 5.4. That gets each one to just about at the full line so it works out well. I can't read the dip stick with clean oil in either vehicle. Maybe Toyota could put a different finish on the stick where the oil level resides? Might cost them 25 cents but it would be worth it

I add 5.3 quarts. I know that oil always remains even when I let it drain for 30 minutes. Some Synthetic oil "sticks" to the engine so I figure I offset it that way. Haven't had a problem, and it always falls dead center on the dipstick ( granted the dipstick is very inaccurate anyhow)

5 quarts and then eyeball about 1/2 another quart. You don't have to be that accurate. A few ounces either side of that won't matter.

You're just fine. I've done that a few times and it won't hurt a thing. 7 quarts maybe but 6 is fine.

I'll be going to my dealer next week for my last "included" oil change.
It's on the way to work.
    Free WiFi
    Free cooked-to-order breakfast

After this, I'll start doing my own oil changes and fill it up based on the dip stick

Agree with this. I don't even check the dipstick.

    Same as everybody else...
I use a single 5 qt jug when I change the oil and filter. Puts the oil level on the dipstick between the two dots. I check my oil once a week at every fill up, no problems.

Same here and check the dipstick the next morning to verify it's around the top dipstick mark. In the end it balances because the remaining half is dumped in on the next change so if I was a little under the next time it's a little over.

5.5 for me. After it stops draining for the first time, Ill start the truck and let it run for about 2 seconds then kill it, you'd be surprised how much oil is left in the engine after doing this. After that, put the plug in and 5.5 on the dot for me

I also put the .5 quart bottle in a gallon zip lock and put it in one of my bed cubbies for the next oil change ;)

I guess the Toyota dealers offer a few perks. At the Lexus dealership, they have TV's at the urinals. Amazing country. What'll they think of next?

It varies by engine and every oil change.

If you throw the plug back on after just a few minutes, it'll probably only take 5 quarts because it didn't drain completely. So if you take it to an oil change shop, bet on them using 5 quarts and seeing it full on the dipstick.

If you do it at home, you'll probably take 5.5 quarts. That's because you remove the drain plug and leave for 15-20 minutes to have a beer, thus allowing all the oil to drain.

In summary, beer helps you complete a more thorough oil change.

straight from Toyota... the 5.5 amount called out is reference quanity
    [IMG]

*: The engine oil capacity is a reference quantity to be used when changing the engine oil. Warm up and turn off the engine, wait more than 5 minutes, and check the oil level on the dipstick.

I pour in just shy of 5qts and then start checking/adding/checking/adding. When I'm close I shut everything, start it for a few seconds and shut it off and check again. This starting seems to give me a clearer reading. Then I top off if necessary.

I just fill it until I see the oil at the top for fill tube and then reinstall the 710 cap. Your truck will burn off what it doesn't need.:anonymous:

5.5 gets me right to the full level

its really not a big deal to run 5.5 quarts even if its "over" full line. you also got to understand under load oil shifts and unless your baffles are insanely good, you can starve the motor out. chances are you are not doing much of that (happens a lot drifting etc) so running even a quart over is not going to hurt anything. now, dont go crazy with more than 6 imho, its detrimental.

btw, i run 13 quarts in my 5.7 drift car with front oil cooler and 3 quart accusump. oil chage is a mother there...

I check ( Dad taught me too) but damn our dipsticks suck, almost to the point of being useless.
