I do when the trail is seriously rocky and I know I'm not going to be going faster than 4lo range. I'm guessing more liberal use of reduced psi would help slow down this kind of wear? If so I guess it's time for me to grab a quality compressor.

yeah airing down will help dramatically. I usually air down on anything more than a graded dirt road. saves the tires and helps with traction/ride. In fact.. I still need to air up from last nights run. have 16 psi in the tires currently.. I usually stay around ~36, give or take a couple PSI on all 4 corners. but.. I also weigh probably around 1k lbs less than you.

Just snagged a pic of my rear.. These are still aired down. I know its not good for the tires, but wanted to get home last night, and fill up at work. As you can see, chunking happens. doesnt help that I was playing around last night.. so was rougher than usual. I have had these for I think almost 4 years now.. and about 40k miles. needless to say.. I will be getting another set in the next few months..

Oh boy! Haha I feel a lot better seeing those right there. How do they ride on the highway?

they have always been good. aired down its definitely squishy and sluggish.. havent really been able to tell a difference in traction with the wear either.

That tire looks terrible. They see a lot of sun, as in parked outside and exposed?

Oops, I should have quoted. Yep.

They have that sun-baked look with all the cracking that comes with it, so I was wondering. Being in the sun isn't the only thing that can cause it, so I guess you shouldn't have jumped to that. I have 12 year old tires that don't look that bad, but they were always stored inside.

As you said, could just be the dust playing tricks to make them look worse than it is.

Was planning to get these tires next, but have a bit of doubt creeping in.

I think that's mainly the dust, but.. they do get hot. The pavement here in Az gets melting hot.. literally. the truck is garaged kept besides being parked at work. they do get used, a lot, aggressively.. and as a fellow boosted taco owner.. you can understand how they see a bit more skinny pedal than others. so.. all of that being said, I dont think they did bad at all. As mentioned before, I am around 40k miles on them.. at least a 1/4 of that has been hard use.

I wouldnt let that stray you from them. they are great tires!

No plans to use them aggressively. Mild, occasional offroading only - i have a dedicated rig for the rough stuff.

Appreciate the insights... and don't have a clue what you're talking about with the skinny pedal :burnrubber: The passenger rear tire is the one with the most tread since I'll be wearing it down to match the rest.

So being new to this- can someone help me understand the differences / pro and cons of a P and C rated tire? 8 assume 10 ply is stronger and heavier?
I tow nothing more than a ATV and I feel that the C rated would be just fine

P is a passenger rated tire. Basically is going to be lighter and more comfortable but have a slimmer sidewall.

The C, D, E range tires are all considered light truck tires (you'll notice it say LT265/75/16..for light truck vs P265/75/16 on the tires). The load ratings are a measure of how much weight they can carry--which means stiffer side walls(more ply) and a rougher ride. C is more than enough for a Tacoma. Hell, a single E rated tire, by itself, can probably carry more weight than the Tacoma is rated to handle. E rated tires are really for big work trucks and vans that are doing some serious hauling. Often, people with E rated tires got them because their specific size didn't come in lower ratings.

    Thanks for that! Really helpful.

So what rating are most people running on tacomas?

And what would you suggest for me, who pulls nothing more than an 6 foot trailer and an ATV

The dilemma that a lot of people find themselves in, is that most aggressive looking A/T or mud tires ONLY come in LT varieties. So, the options might be limited to LT (C,D,E--C and E are most common load ratings) depending on the tire.

Example: For the BFG K02, you can't get it in a P rated tire--and you HAVE to get an E rated version if you want to stick with your stock 16 inch wheels. They dont make a 16 inch tire with a C load rating) A lot of guys upgrade to 17inch wheels just to get the C-rated BFG to avoid an ultra-stiff, overkill E rated tire.

You could easily get by with a passenger (P) rated tire for your needs. Toyo AT2 has a P rated version of this tire. It won't look as aggressive though or have as thick sidewalls as LT tires. So if you care about the look and/or are concerned about side-wall punctures from off roading you should consider the LT versions.

I wouldn't go above C-rated LT tires if you can help it. Anything above C is heavier, stiffer, and as a result will ride rougher and louder. The extra weight will put extra strain on suspension and brake components too. So, over the lifetime of the tire/truck those components will wear faster.

(Personally, I like the aesthetics of the more aggressive tires so I'm leaning LT even though I rarely haul or to anything...and rarely off-road for that matter)

As much as I liked these tires when I first got them, I cannot wait to get them off the truck now. Wet traction is terrible to the point of being dangerous. Don't get me wrong the tires wear well and have been quiet so far (have 3 years or do on them). I can easily break traction at 30-40 mph. Sucks when you need to pass someone on a 2 lane.
