Yes, I'm an idiot! Too many Bud Lights! Anyway, was changing oil last night (successful oil change...not hard at all) and initially opened the trannny drain. I left the plug out until nothing was dripping anymore. I then realized what I did, put the plug back in and drained the oil.

Anyway, hope I don't need to take to dealer. How do I refill?

Go to Amsoil site to see capacity of drain and fill,on tranny, my 2013 is 3.2 qts. fill plug is on passenger side near tailstock of tranny, use a WS ATF Fluid, as Amsoil,Valvoline ,Totota OEM WS or others !measure exact as per your specs.

How warm was the oil? The transmission needs to be at a specific temp to check oil. If it was to warm you now will be low on oil.

Engine was cold (other than sitting in this Carolina heat), just started it and pulled into garage, shut it off.

Can I drive the thing to the store for more fluid?

How much fluid came out? If you opened the "check" plug instead of the "drain" plug you would not have had much fluid come out. If you opened the drain plug and a lot of fluid came out, I would not drive the truck at all until you re-fill.

Check plug, drain plug? Hell if I know. It was on the bottom, looked like the oil drain plug. At least at the time it did :)

Be cautious with what you use. If anything ever happens (issue pops up under warranty on your trans) and they find out somehow that you mucked with the fluid, you could be up shit creek.

If the fluid was cold you shouldn't have any run out. On the third gen the check and drain are the same. There is a small tube that is screwed into the drain. That sets the level of the fluid at a specific temp. That is why you cannot check your fluid when it hot or it will be under filled.

classic goat rope in progress. now you have to make sure you get the correct tranny fluid from the store. then how much to put in? then getting it in the fill hole on the passenger side of the tranny, will need a pump tool.

OP are you talking about your 2002 Tacoma? Just curious cause that's what it says you have under your avatar but this was posted in the 3rd gen forum. Not a huge deal just want to be sure that you get the right advice on how to proceed, if there's any difference anyway. I thought the 3rd gen transmissions were sealed? :notsure:

Read this first! Checking the trans fluid level in the 3rd gen is not the same as in the 2nd.
