My mileage goes to serious shit above 70-75 mph. If you keep it 65 or below, mileage is way better.

You also need to assess after many miles on the freeway, because a few blocks of City driving and one onramp can distort the average if you are only on the freeway for a few miles.

I agree. Short trips and hills kill it also.

Fuelly shows me at 18.6 now, but my real mileage is 19.5 if you take out the off-road and heavily loaded mountain trips. My 17 mile commute is too short and hilly for me to ever get those 22+ numbers. On long trips, I'm usually loaded, going up large passes, and traveling more than 65, so I don't do so hot then either.

If anything, so far the update makes it easier for me to drive smoothly. I think that could improve or hurt your mileage depending on how you take advantage of the situation. I feel like I'm getting better mileage, but I don't have enough data yet to make that call.

I got 25.8 mpg today when I filled up for the week...382.4 miles I believe....Everybody should get www.fuelly.com to keep up with their mileage.

I baby my truck for the most part too....

    I use 100% gas @ 91 octane....$2.59 a gallon today...

    Reader's Digest version:
    1) Got the update (my VIN is listed)
    2) I called service twice because I couldn't tell difference - wound up speaking with the master tech that performed TSB
    3) He said he already put in notes/report back to Toyota, when I called back the first time, that I still had symptoms after TSB update
    4) I have a surge/higher revs when shifting from P to R to D, not a slip or delay, and same surge/higher revs when idling in P
    5) I do not feel more power, not holding shifts longer, no different shift pattern, or even half of ECT -- sorry
    6) I am still happy with my truck unless something happens with it to change my mind about that
    7) No comment if this TSB corrected cruise control issues
    8) I don't think @smitty99 will be impressed with this TSB update :D

I got the update on Wednesday, and cannot tell that big of a difference. I called service twice and wound up talking to the master tech that performed the update on my 2nd call. He explained how he did the update. He also said that their service department received the new TSB last Friday and that my truck is the first one that they updated. He already noted in his report back to Toyota that I still had some symptoms I described above. I didn't have the delay from P to R or D, etc., but did/do still have the surge. It isn't terrible but it is there. I just keep my foot on the brake when shifting from P, R, and D. My truck has gone dead once, but only once, while backing out of the parking lot space one evening. The parking space was on a slight incline, and my truck had been sitting there only since lunch. I also have an idle that is normal then revs up then drops back down when going from P, R, and/or D - and that is also when it is just idling in P. I can't comment on cruise control because I quit using cruise control 8 years ago. I detest cruise control. I did engage cruise yesterday to experiment and it shifted from 4,5,6 on cresting inclines/hills. To me, cruise control is WAY more 'shifty' than driving without cruise engaged. I didn't try cruise control before, so I can't comment on any difference after the TSB.

As for shifting while driving like I normally do (without cruise), I can't tell any appreciable difference with the update. I am getting the same MPG on regular trips that I have been getting since I got the truck (20.5 - 23.x mpg's with aggressive m/t's in the 245/75/16 size). I don't mean to be argumentative to anyone here, but I don't see or feel the difference in the shift patterns. I don't feel more power. I don't feel like my truck is half way of ECT. I don't feel it holding 5th and/or 6th gears longer going up inclines. Again, that is without using cruise control. I'm still not going to use cruise control. I think I've used cruise control maybe 3 times in the past 8 years.

So there ya have it: The Gospel According to JayDubya.

Hate to be the one to break it to you, but Smitty already got the TSB and reported back positive results a few days ago. Bummer you didn't feel a difference as most of us did.

Glad he got something positive with his truck lolol. I dont feel disappointed in te TSB because I wasnt having driving issues people here reported, and cruise control was a non issue for me. I didnt hve delay either but instead a surge in revs but nothing Id call bad or be alarmed about. But, I was hopin it would address the surge. Im still happy and glad others are having positive results.

9 days after TSB and performance is greatly improved. So much better that I ordered a K&N setup for it. Yes it is that much better. A month ago I would not have wasted money on a CAI for this truck.

When I bought it, they said it was .5 quart low. I will get them to check it at the 10k mile oil change/service. I hit 9,000 miles just this evening, so I will get them to recheck the tranny fluid at that time.

My family drove the truck to Colorado earlier this week (850 miles) very inconsistent shift patterns, up/down shifting on the interstate, no better than 16 mpg. I decided to call the dealer closest to where they are, and the service mgr said "Our factory guy said a flash was coming out, but we don't have it". I offered the TSB, however it was pretty evident he didn't want to touch my truck, said he couldn't get it in 'for weeks'.

So I called my dealer and talked to service- My guy said he is aware of the TSB, and he said sounds like the truck is a candidate, but he also wanted some more mileage on the truck before he does it. He said from his knowledge the logic on the trans is wonky and takes a while to smooth out. I said "Even after 750 miles of straight highway?" He said- "Yup".

He wants to see it when they get back. We'll have 3,500 miles on the truck by then.

The dealer can tell you what he wants. Mine never improved in 6 months or 5000 miles. Even after fluid fill of 1 qt no improvement. Did TSB a week after fluid top off. Night and day difference. You should get it done ASAP. They should do it if you have symptoms even if it only has 3 miles on it. Throw the bs card and go somewhere else or call Corporate with your shift issues. My dealer gracefully did a 180 after I opened a case and I appreciate it. Dealer did an excellent follow up service.

Got the update today and also asked that the u-joints be greased. Service advisor tried to tell me there are no zerks and the u-joints are not serviceable. I politely disagreed, The repair order states in addition to TSB 0077-16 (op code TC1601) performed, the u-joints were greased. The service advisor was "unavailable" when I picked up the truck. Maybe hiding out so he wouldn't have to explain how the tech greased the u-joints that "don't have zerk fittings".

Anyway there is a noticeable difference for the better! The transmission shifts as I expect it to now. I also don't have the vibration when coming to a stop.

My wife also noticed the difference, and I had not talked with her about this in advance. We made a 400 mile road trip recently over mountain passes from 400 to 4,000 feet+ and she said today that the truck seemed to be a lot smoother, before it seemed "jerky" like it couldn't find the right gear. Just goes to show you the problem was apparent to her with no advance notice of the situation.

BTW, the dealer did not put a sticker indicating the TSB update under the hood.

I was disappointed that my rear wheel drive has no zerks in the u-joints. I checked before my 5k service.

Had mine flashed at the 10,000 check up.... My truck is 100% better on the shifting in cruise control and the MPG's are up on my highway driving. Ive never seen 20 mpg on a 10 mile strech of road and now it getting almost 23. Happy with the update!

    Dark Sky,
I am in Oregon as well and they didn't put a sticker on mine either. When I picked it up I asked the service manager if they put a sticker on it and he said "yes". I could not find a sticker. I called back and was told they only place a sticker on the vehicle for safety recalls.

What dealership did you have yours done at?

Same results here, No 1/2 ect feeling or anything. I'm not super disappointed, but I thought it was better at first, then truck just went back to normal after the trans relearned

I had mine done at Kendall Toyota in Eugene. I've read other posts here on Tacoma World including photos of the sticker that was placed on the inside of the hood of some owners. No big deal I guess, we have the paperwork showing it was done. Where did you get yours done?
