I tried asking this question in the 2nd gen section a while back with no response, so I'm going to try it here again since I know there may be more 5 luggers lurking here who might be able to answer my question?

Are the wheel well openings on the 2wd 5 lug front and rear fenders with no factory flares same size as the opening on the prerunner/4wd fenders with the flares removed? I've searched and have seen a few mentions of swapping them but no one who did it. Looking at pics of the two styles I think they're the same or close to it, but I'm looking for confirmation.

I just picked up a 2013 white DCLB 4x4, and I'm thinking of running 35s. On my last Tacoma I ran 34's and never put the flares back on. I actually liked the no flares look but always thought it looked a little weird with all the holes in the fenders. I figure with the color I have now and the long bed I could easily find someone with a 5 lugger who wants flares or some fenders from the salvage yard to swap in if the fenders are pretty much the same. In reality I'll probably be cutting them so it doesn't really matter that much if the opening is the same, I just want to know if there are any real differences between the two before I go down that path

I believe they are the same fenders, minus the square cut-outs for the bodywork clips. The 5-lug non-XR version has the square cut-outs for the body mouldings on the underside of the fenders that come with the XR.

The other aspect - the aftermarket Bushwacker fender flares will go on all of the Tacoma versions - including the base 5-lug. This correlates my opinion.

I realize this is late but if you're still looking to get rid of your fender flares i'll take them.
