Using an aux switch to switch between truck battery/vs aux battery for dash cam

I have never added any sort of auxiliary switch but I am looking into it for something specific and I want a clean looking install. basically I run blackvue dash cams that can record while my car (currently driving a civic shhhh, planning on a tacoma by the end of the year tho) is off and they connect to cellink battery b dashcam batteries so you don't have to run down your vehicles power as much connected to the fuse box.

the way I have it set up now is I use a 4 port 12v hub connected to my several dash cams that plugs into the cellink b. the hub has a switch so at home i can turn it off that way the cameras do not drain the cellink b (or the car battery). the issue with this is sometimes i forget to turn it back on when I drive next. currently i have an sg9665gc thats connected to a 12v socket so even if i forget to turn on my blackvues i still have that camera running, but in the future I want to simply and only have 1 cam up front.

so basically i want a switch that in the off position would be connected to an ACC/AUX type fuse that is only on while the vehicle is on (that way if I forget to turn it on the vehicle will turn the dash cams on still), but if I hit the switch so its "on" it switches the power to the cellink b and that way I can use parking mode.

i want to get actual OEM buttons for my car(2012 civic) that would look genuine, and I also plan on buying a new truck (2017 tacoma) in 5-6 months and will want to do the same. it doesn't seem too hard to find buttons that you can use in the "empty" aux button spots but they seem to only be "on/off" switches when i am actually looking to switch between two different "hot" wires.

any ideas? i am thinking the button could just be an on off switch that controlled a small box that switched power sources.

 

Should be quite easy to do with one switch and one relay

Just wire it up to use the NO and NC contacts as needed.

I am not experienced with wiring besides hooking up a few things to my fuse box but never used switches or relays.

i drew this crappy picture to see if this would "work." red is suppose to be an ACC type fuse thats only on while the car is on (btw, do tacomas have fuses that are only on while the truck is on? my silverado's fuses were all always on even when the truck was off) and yellow a BATT fuse that is always on when the vehicle is off even black is ground. one thing i wasnt sure about was if the red coming out of the fuse can go to the cellink b and also the relay from the same fuse, or if i would need to use different fuses for that. in my head i am thinking this drawing would make it a parallel circuit and would be ok but im no expert.

also, would the switch (like if i used an OEM aux switch installed on the dash) get power from the relay? or what it have its own power in to control the relay? the cellink b will always supply power to whatever is connected to it (so even tho the "out" cable is red, its technically always live as long as it has a charge), which i feel like that means the switch needs to be able to control the relay even while the truck was off.

i hadn't considered if when the truck turns off, if the switch can be effected by that. if it was connected to a wire that was only on while the truck was on, would that mean the switch can not control the relay while the truck is off? and in that case the switch would have to be connected to an always on wire?

like i said never used a relay before, and couldn't really find any examples of something similar to what i want to do.

 

The best advice I can give is learn simple DC circuits .

Define just what you want to do and when.

Then figure out just how you need to do things to make it work.

The switch just energizes the relay coil .

Want constant power it can be done that way .

want to run multiple circuits it can be figured out

ok thanks! i realized my understanding of how a relay works was complete ignorance hah. that definitely helps. I took an electrical circuits class in college but that was so long ago, i dont do any electrical stuff so i was going into this clueless.

You know I made a mistake...since you want power when IGN then select after On or OFF in Valet.
