I am about to paint my sliders, and am looking for a chip resistant coating.

I have used POR 15 Chassis Paint in the past, as a chassis paint. While not on sliders, the paint held up quite well. However, it looks like Chassis Paint is no longer sold.

My best guess is POR 15 TopCoat is the replacement for their old Chassis Paint product.

Does anyone have any experience with TopCoat?

I'm sure grinding a slider on a rock will remove paint - I am OK with that. I am really looking for something that won't get sandblasted every time I am out in the desert.

About to do the same with my sliders. I will POR-15 for base coat, but will use rustoleum bed liner spray for topcoat.

Have a can of POR15 waiting on my bench for the sliders (and what ever else I want to coat). I asked about the Top Coat product when I bought the can of POR15. They didn't know much about it then. Looking forward to hearing an answer here.

Here's a tip on the POR15. Don't open the can! Instead lay the can on its side and poke a small hole on the side of the can near the lid. Pour out what you need into a disposable container and screw in a sheet metal screw (tight) to seal the can. I also use a small rubber washer for added sealing. Using this method a can will last a long time - mine is a couple of years old. My first can I bought, I followed the instructions after opening by using plastic wrap to seal the paint before replacing the lid and it still hardened into a solid block within 2 months. That stuff is too expensive to let spoil - at least for me...

Edit: I've used this stuff for many years on all sorts of applications from car bodies, truck parts, baseboard radiator covers, to even my home built log splitter. To use it as a primer, apply multiple coats per the instructions and allow to fully cure. Then scuff with 320 grit or even steel wool to remove the gloss followed by paint of your choice. My baseboard radiators were rusting from using latex paint. I stripped them clean followed by por15 and then rustoleum spray paint and they look great and rust free. I've used it on the roof of my old ram that suffered paint failure. I didn't topcoat and the por15 held up great for 4 years but severely chalked. No rust though when I sanded it off for proper repaint.

Yup sure is great stuff. I always buy in the small oz. containers so I don't have to worry about re sealing and possibly hardening if not sealed correctly.

Fyi got my relentless sliders in today and will be doing what I stated above by using por as base coat and top coating with rustoleum bed liner spray. Knowing these will get all sorts of scratches. I'm not gonna spend to much time on them. Just wanna protect them from rust more than anything. I know this thread is quite old but does anyone have any updates on the use of por-15 or possibly pictures of how it turned out? I have a set of bear sliders in my basement as well as a streamline bumper and I'm going crazy trying to decide what I'm going to finish them with. I've considered everything from simple Rust-Oleum paint over top of etched primer to bed liner to por-15 with Rust-Oleum on top. All of my research really seems the point to this being highly opinionated my goal in this is simply rust protection and a nice clean finish with light texture.

Mine did not hold up very well with POR15. I would just use rattle can. Can be touched up easily that way.

Thanks for the quick response man I'm actually at Lowe's picking up some supplies. I honestly think I'm just going to go with the good self etching primer and do the Rust-Oleum textured paint. I am going to grab some bedliner at work tomorrow and hit the mounting bracket area and see if I like it as well or better I just don't like the thought of the heavy texture holding dirt because this is my daily driver not just an off-road rig.

For my next round on my sliders I may do a rubberized undercoating paint. I used some on the LCAs before they were installed. Liked the durability. Best thing about rattle can paint is that it is readily available.

Be careful which one you use as regular por15 is non uv resistent. Use it as a base, let it dry, scuff it and topcoat with bedliner then top coat that with satin black spray paint as most diy bedliner isn’t uv resistentveither. I’ve learned this through work the hard way

I absolutely agree, powder coat and all that expensive stuff can break down and wear especially when using as a step but can't be easily touched up. I have however pondered getting them powder coated then having them ceramic coated. That ceramic coating is no joke. I just don't know that I care that much. I think im going to buy one of every can of liner and coating I can find, test it and go with my favorite. I started stripping them last night to prep for sanding.

your correct, the regular I believe is not UV resistant but the top coat is.Im not sure im going that route after all bc it seems to be almost like tar once dried and applied.Im going to spend time with r&r and document and photo the process for others in the future.

That's wild bc they have the highest rating and number of reviews on the internet for their bed liner.I have personally seen some rustoleom jobs that looked really good. Like I said i'm gonna trial them and see what I like best.I'll test them on the bracket area or inside of my bumper. I also grabbed a can of rustoleom textured paint at home depot last night bc i saw some pics recently of it that looked nice.

Chasiss Saver is another great product as well. That was available to me locally and I had great results painting a front tube bumper and to coat my frame.

I like the rustoleum. I tried the duplicator prepping with a roughed surface, cleaned, and etch primed. It looked grest but as soon as something bumped it it chipped off

I used por15. I think those that have had bad luck with it did not follow all of the steps. Degrease, metal prep solution then paint. I had a set of used sliders that I got that a rattle can was used on. Lots of rust spots from missed areas that are harder to get to without a brush.

Edit the backside of the skids when purchased where not painted...I would not want that rust against my frame!!!

Has any one tried a commercially applied bed liner like rinoliner or line-x ?

I used hipoliner on my front bumper. Its a product we use alot at work and holds up well. Applied with a schutz gun it is a commercial type priduct but can be applied at home with either air or rolled on. I haven’t ever tried rolling it. This is the tintable version i mixed in some white base

also did this and it has withstood the winters here with salt and sand on the roads.
