While washing my truck tonight I noticed a small rust spot on the roof of the truck. I didn't expect to see this on a truck that's 9 months old. Will the dealership correct this or what should I do to prevent it from getting bigger?image.jpg

Not 100% sure if the dealer will do anything but if it were me i would get a Duplicolor touch up stick and go over it they work pretty well just make sure that you get the right paint code

I swear no one on this forum understands the vehicle warranty.

If its caused by damage, its yours. If a defect, its warranty.

Proving which it is will be what is interesting.

get a grinder and take it down to the bare metal, the entire roof, then put a new base coat, then a new color coat, then a new clear coat and if that doesnt solve the problem then theres not much you can do hahaha jk jk just take it to the dealership, i would hope they could fix that

"Maybe a chance it is not rust on the metal, but small metal or iron shaving that has settled on the paint. I had a white truck and several spots that look a lot like you have, ordered some Iron-X from auto geek. Look it up on YouTube, lots of contaminants settle on auto finish, recommend this product.

This would be my assumption as well. Especially on the roof

If it is raised, then use a clay bar. If it is lower than the paint level, then 99% chance it is a rock chip and just started to rust. Just sand the rust out and use touch up paint. Gotta be careful not to make the spot any bigger though.

how long have you had the truck? that spot looks pretty old to me, I wouldn't put anything on it because the dealer may consider that "body work" and could void the warranty. It could have easly got nicked during transport on a railcar or from the truck that brought it to the dealership... I've seen a lot of damages on new vehicles during shipping. I use to do damage inspections for a shipping company!

Ive had the truck about 9 months. I've never noticed it before, I feel like it needs addressed somehow. I'm thinking touch up paint but I'll ask the dealer when I go there looking for touch up paint.

OK well from experience I have something for you to try. First is there a noticeable scratch or rock chip that chipped the paint or does it look like it is just on the surface? If it just looks like it is on the surface you need to get some IronX and spray it on the vehicle, wait the five minutes, work it in with brush and rinse. When I bought my 2012 Ecoboost I had small rust spots all over the paint. I took it to the dealer and they were unable to get them off. I did some research and if the truck was transported on a rail car the train tracks kick up the rust which works itself into the paint. The IronX got everything off then I waxed it and it was the best looking paint I have had until my new Tacoma of course.

X2 on IronX. New car prep (and I'm not talking about what the dealership does) Should include full IronX treatment, clay bar then polishing if desired and then a good sealant or coating.

Doesn't look "through" to me, just surface,
A lot of honeymooners with a new truck, I'm the same way.
Might as well leave it in the garage, its going to get wear and tear outside.

I have found that doing the IronX before first wax is the best thing you could ever do. I go to the car wash when it is not busy and do a quick rinse off, spray on IronX (whole car+wheels), let it do it's thing, work it in a little with brush, then rinse. After, dry it and wax with Collinite 845 and shit looks good.

It def looks like it chipped the paint. I tried scratching it off with my finger nail with no luck. I'll look into this IronX tho. Thanks

Proving it wasn't something on your end is near impossible unless it is under the clear coat. I had what appeared to be a wad of chew lobbed onto my roof. By the time I saw it, it was dry and I knocked it loose, but didn't wash the truck for about a week. That stuff ate a small spot down to the metal. I'm just going to touch it up.
