Sure did, cut an old toy axle at my local junkyard, cost me $30 bucks.

What I would give for a HF press and a welder in my garage. Sadly no spare cash right now for such tools.

Ditto, same friend I borrowed the garage for the sas had the HF press.

Figured you were pulling the rear shafts and taking it to the shop. Wanted to make sure you knew about the 2nd collar/seal otherwise can't really tell until it leaks out again... and destroys a pair of shoes again...

Thanks for watching out for me as always bud. Half the knowledge I've learned about my truck has come from your experiences haha I also plan on using the method @Dirty Pool mentioned in another thread where you can put a marker mark on the collar and when you put the shaft back in the marker mark will disappear after some revolutions from being wiped away on the seal.

Welp I took on the rear axle seal/bearing project this weekend. Was pretty straight forward but still relatively new to me since I've never pulled an axle before. Honestly the hardest part was fucking around with the drum brake assembly which I've only done once before last year when I did all new drums, shoes, wheel cylinders and hardware.

    Symptoms of the seal leak:
    C3DB9E7A-0352-4351-877F-70393F587979_fbccf91d43faa3b1696c5bdecc5a8ad3edf6db62.jpg

Pulled the drum and the shoes were beyond soaked.

    6E7F9EAF-5908-4870-8F91-7E70D2C30B25_aba2dc86226c0f0ae8b0208c5150b3ab1c6b0ed4.jpg

The old seal actually looked okay. I replaced it anyway though.

    B66EB45B-785F-46E9-A94C-56B65C8D461C_20e1f5c8652aa58b976f3384e0c7ed5e47d21548.jpg

As always my projects make a huge mess.

    B09CBCF0-59F2-4BC3-AB9D-F7335E50F1B6_d2692e4b66b6f5765f724d22d6312aa9244ca4d4.jpg

So I honestly don't know if the bearing went and is what caused the seal to fail or the seal failed and caused the bearing to go but the bearing was straight up fucked.

This video shows how bad it was:

I bought the axle seal/bearing kit for about $120 and had a local machine remove/press all the new stuff on for about $90. It's great that I found them, the machinist has done these axles before and knew his shit. Best part was that they are only 10 mins away from my house.

Cleaned everything up before I drove the new seal in:

    Everything back together:

    Nice and tight:

    http://vid75.photobucket.com/albums/i314/wings_of_fury/3BBCBBDB-FA5F-4E26-B67A-FB6C9283B622.mp4

I used the marker method to test and make sure the new seal is riding on the one ring properly:

Then it was just a matter of re-assembly. Also drained and filled the rear diff with fresh fluid in case there was any contamination.

Also, my wife just got a new car so the Altima is my new DD! No more driving J5 to work everyday!

Looks good, lucky with a shop who had prior knowledge of these helps a ton.

Might be a trending pattern, mine went out with 202,xxx on the clock.

Yeah I am nervous that it's still leaking though. I saw a tiny bit of fluid on the tire this morning but I admittedly never cleaned the tire and a decent amount of brake fluid also leaked so I am hoping it's just residual. Going to wipe everything down/hose it off tonight so I can really check. I'll be pissed if I did all that and still have a leak.

Yeah I'm not exactly sure where these mechanical balls came from. I kinda just say fuck it, research the shit out of it, and go to town and hope for the best. I guess the more I do and learn, the more confident I feel. I also try not to think about what could happen if I fuck up. :p

Haha yeah I've been due to replace the submarine gif. Especially since that's when I still had a stock front bumper and 265's.

Yup. Luckily I had easy access to a machine shop but next time I do think I will ask them to leave the tone ring and last collar off so I can adjust it myself. I ended up needing to do it twice because the collar was pushed on too far the first go around.

I'm going to have a shop press it off and then give me everything else. And smack the shit out of it with a tube until it gets to my measurement I'll be taking.

Can you explain the marker method, a little confused on that. Do I just put the axle in and spin again and see where the oil is at?

Yeah I just made lines across the collar at 4 locations all the way around. Put the axle in and spun it, and the seal removes the marker and gives you the line of where the seal is riding. No oil or grease needed.
