Would be great if replacing the diff fixed the howling. It's what's causing these diffs to wear improperly that's the problem.

Yep, until they figure that out they are just wasting money and trying to buy themselves time with the customer.

Interesting. Seems to be coming from the rear end, but I'm open to anything as long as I can get it fixed. Was originally only happening under light throttle from 25-35 or so, but in the last day or two I've noticed it up to 50 and during decel.

I guess I'm in the minority on gas mileage too. I'm averaging 21.5+. Every tank. Which is down slightly from the '16 SR5 that blew up on me, I was getting 22.7 in it. Now, admittedly nearly all of my miles are highway. I commute 35 miles and the speed limits are:

    First 2 miles - 25 mph
    Next mile - 45 mph
Next 8 miles - 55 mph (traffic usually around 65)
Next 13 miles - 65 mph (traffic usually around 75)
Next 10 miles - 55 mph (traffic usually around 60)
Last half mile - 35 mph

In the SR5 on Memorial Day weekend, I drove from Virginia through the mountains (certainly not like Colorado mountains) to my brother's in West Virginia and back. Round trip - 24.5 MPG.

You guys and your crazy gas mileage! I hover around 18.5 to 19.5 mpg per tank. If I see a number in the 20s I get excited! I'm a little bit jealous, but I'm not mad about it. If I were too concerned with mpgs, I would've bought a Prius.

I have to agree with Aussie on this one, it sounds like wind noise to me. With these crappy computer speakers I have at work it's hard to hear anything though, so it could just be that.

Agreed. I don't really worry about my mileage - it is a freaking truck after all, just reporting what I get.

If you can make the noise by feathering the throttle, that's it.

The wind noise sound is almost identical to the rear end noise, ironically. However your speed does not match the described process for replicating the rear end howl that most of us are experiencing. The symptoms for front lower control arms howling are usually matched up with the speed you were showing in that video so I'd be inclined to say you need to tape or plug your front Lower Control Arm holes. If you still have the noise after ruling out (taping or plugging LCAs) then it could be the rear end. However there's a TSB for the front LCAs where the dealer will fix it for you. So ultimately if I were you, I'd take it to the dealer, schedule ahead of time that you want someone to take a ride-along with you from service dept, then replicate the noises for them. Let them chase it down from there.

snapped a pic of mileage this morning after my commute. This was from Dolores, Co to Durango, Co. Starting elevation 7000, peak elevation 9300. At the dealer now getting rear diff replaced.

usafwx that sounds like mine, synyster06gates yours sounds like a wind howl because it changes tone (like air blowing across the top of a bottle). Did you say you had the LCA TSB done?

I just wonder, are the only ones with rear diff howls only automatics? If so, is it possible that it's the gearing differences between the manuals and autos? Just a thought, I have no expertise, just trying to throw out an idea for those of you who would have the expertise in such matters. Finding a fix is what's important.
