no secrets - other than making sure the dimensions of your cooler fit within a bear box. it sucked sometimes when i had my 1st gen. had to keep the cooler in the front seat at night and while i was hiking - it wouldn't fit in the backseat. i would leave it in my bear box if i had one. i just learned to pack light and plan simple meals - less clean up the better and tin foil is your friend!
bears have an amazing sense of smell - better than any bloodhound. the general rule is lock up anything that smells because a bear might interpret the smell as food. and water bottles....i went to a bear aware course a few years back and the guy who gave the main presentation was a wildlife biologist. his main job was investigating any human/bear encounter whether it be an attack, rummaging through garbage, whatever. one of the cases that made him rethink a lot of past cases was when a couple of very experienced hikers came back to their backcountry base camp one day and found it had been ransacked by a bear. the bear was long gone but their gear was toast. they swore up and down that they knew the rules and hadn't left anything in camp - all of their food and cooking gear was either locked up or hung up in a tree. the only thing that was left out was an empty nalgene type bottle. they think that the bear could smell the plastic and knew that plastic things sometimes contain tasty things so it went berserk on the campsite. after that he started recommending that even empty water bottles and containers be locked up too.
On your next trip are you taking in Glacier Park? Stay in Two Medicine on the East side and take in a couple of the ranger hikes. There's one ranger up there who has some interesting stories about bears.
I have lots of suggestions for exploring around Missoula too....

This really surprises me. Black bears here in the Sierra's have been breaking into cars for the 30 years I have been going there.

Yea, I wouldn't leave anything that has scent in the car, including toothpaste, chapstick, car scent deodorizers, cigs, etc. Just because they are not known to break into cars, doesn't mean they won't start.

Do bears hate mothballs? Perhaps they'd keep them away.
All this makes me want to visit the desert, no bears, no crowds.

I'll pack a .308 rifle just in case, I don't like to get blood on my hands.

I get along with snakes and spiders and scorpions.

Yeah....been following that on the local news too. Kinda scary. I'm hoping the parasite outbreak is because of the heat and low water. Maybe when things cool down the water level will rise and things will return to normal

I work for a state environmental agency and one of the more important tasks of my job is investigating fish kills. Located on the east coast, and one thing I noticed when out west this summer is the water habitat. It is specific . . . cold clear water, shallow rivers, and sensitive species of fish that have very specific niches in the environment. Waters in this area are for the most part deep, murky, and have a lot of hardy species, though the more sensitive ones are slowly making their way back. Normally fish kills here are due to some kind of pollution event, so it is sad to see that the human element in this one might be due to folks simply enjoying nature. I hope that the disease runs its course and that the ecosystem bounces back.

Sorry MTgirl, I still need to write up our trip on here, but like I said, I only have my phone as far as internet access at my house and haven't had time as of late.

The west is burning. Hopefully, rain here soon-lots of cities around here have had engines/crews deployed in other parts of the state for some time fighting fires in other parts of the state.
