Mine ALWAYS happened when I started the truck. 3 tanks since replaced cluster and no more resets. It is nice actually letting the trip meter roll near 400 now.

    None...yet!
Interesting. I have never had the problem with my Tacoma, but on my 2015 Dodge Ram Turbo Diesel, if I "jumped the start" before the electronics stabilized, sometimes the radio would not function at all. I'd have to shut down and wait a while and then turn the key and let the electronics stabilize before actually turning the key all the way to actually get the starter and engine going. Kinda makes sense that you have let the electronics "boot" if you want them to work. With the dodge it was a matter of 5 seconds.

Any common denominator here causing the resets? Is there a solid fix that people have had performed on their trucks that addressed this?

    Thanks

They replaced my entire cluster and been fixed for weeks now. Zero resets on new speedometer cluster. It is not a module. The entire assembly with the glass fully intact. Miles are set at factory to match your mileage.

Was the dealer able to replicate the resetting? I took my truck in once already and they weren't able to replicate it but I hope they will just replace the cluster

no I complained to dealer with no results. I provided receipts of another TW member. After no satisfaction opened a case with Corporate. Then was fixed.

I posted this above, and Ill repost it as I believe its still holds true. My truck is now at 6700+ miles, and Im experiencing no more resets. This is noteworthy considering I was having them CONSTANTLY, now I'm not having ANY since I made the following observation, and am adhering to this start procedure. Good luck.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    2016 Tacoma Owners and Fans,

My '16 Off Road, AC with AT now has just shy of 6300 miles total.

Up until 4900 miles ODO, I recorded 13 or 14 resets on the trip meter. It was ridiculous. They ALWAYS occurred when starting the truck. They were totally random. Miles driven between these resets could be 100 miles or 400 miles. We're talking random here. But they were frequent. Frequent enough that I had zero confidence in using the Trip Meters as they are designed to be used.
I'd been round and round with the dealer. Yes, I know there's been a few fixes where the instrument clusters have been replaced, and those trucks have had no re-occurrences of the problem. But to date, Toyota still has no idea what has been causing these resets. They just replace components. I was pushing real hard for such a fix, my dealer has been nothing but resistant. But frankly, I live in a pretty rural area, and its a 90 mile drive to a dealer, so I've not been real jazzed to push it as hard as someone else might.

    DEVELOPMENT!
The last couple times my truck reset the trip meters, I was starting to see a pattern. We all know to start the trucks with the Auto trannies and the push button start, you hold the brake pedal down, then you start. Ok. I suddenly realized I was seeing an occasional 'blink' of the Start Indicator on the instrument panel. Its VERY rare, and VERY brief. But at some point I THINK I observed that one of those very brief 'blink-outs' might have been coinciding with a Trip meter fail. I decided over two months and over 1300 miles ago to PAY PARTICULAR ATTENTION that when depressing the brake, taking an extra couple seconds to be ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE that the electronics were stable. Its like starting a diesel with glow plugs. You don't just stick the key in the hole turn and crank. You wait a few seconds.
Yes, I know the problem might be not the cluster at all. I MIGHT be a completely unrelated electrical issue upon we say "well, the dealer needs to look into that and fix it." UNDERSTAND, dealers are completely resistant to addressing any problems they cannot duplicate. And intermittent electrical problems are a B!TCH.

Whelp, here I an today. In reiteration, it has been over two months and over 1300 miles since I've seen a trip meter reset. KEEP in mind, this truck was having these resets on a chronic frequency!

So, that's what I have to offer. IF by some chance, anyone is seeing the info screen flash, blink, or otherwise not light up, then it does, DO NOT start the truck unless the electronics are stable. That's what I've been doing, and I've not seen a reset since.
I must say too, it is a strange coincidence that the last time a reset occurred, was just prior to the 5000 mile service, and I've NOT seen a reset since.

    NOTE:
Should I EVER see another reset, I will reopen the can of worms with the dealers, Corporate (and yes, I my truck IS on record.)

    -Chip

I've noticed the same thing. The "Push Brake to Start" screen always blacks out right before I have a odometer reset ... and I hear a very loud relay click right before the truck cranks, that I only hear when the odometer resets. I haven't been able to force it to duplicate. It's random, but it is very consistent that the meter resets any time the screen blinks.

I am planning to follow mrproduxn's path as soon as I have time to follow through with Corporate.

With all the resets I had, I went around and around with the dealer and corporate, and still had no satisfaction.

    Same but different problem...
    1) Trip A and Trip B reset every time I stop and re-start the truck
    2) The overhead dome lights do not come on when you open the door
They do come on when the key is turned on
They do come on when you manually turn them on
And yes the switches are set to the door position both front and rear
    3) The key fob will not lock/unlock the doors and the panic button does not work

It seems like it would be a fuse or relay but what circuit do all these have in common...

This may sound weird. But, I've noticed mine resets when the passenger door opens or something in that manner. Mine has reset three times already. Each time it was when I had a passenger with me. I seldom have someone ride with me. Then again. Maybe I'm going crazy......

Any TSB on this?? Didn't bother leaving my truck at the dealer because I was sure they would not replicate, 4th time it's happened. Case opened with corporate and it does happen randomly

I think you are onto something here, thank you for posting your thoughts. I am on road trip and my tripometer is holding steady at 800+ miles without resetting. As you suggested, I have been making sure the electronics are stabilized prior to hitting the start button (after pressing the brake.) I don't believe my tripometer had ever previously exceeded 150-200 miles before randomly resetting. I've had my truck almost one year.

Well... it reset again this morning. I was by myself. I thought maybe it was something to do with the passenger door. I was wrong. Driving me nuts....
