I was washing my truck this afternoon and the sponge caught this plastic piece that appears to join two pieces of seal and it snapped off. What's it gonna take to fix, and is this covered under warranty? Pics are of the piece that snapped off, where it snapped off, and from the driver side with the piece in place.

    Thanks,
    Paul

This reminds me, I need to have the dealer repair my passenger rear door the next time I take it in for service (the technician is a friend of mine otherwise I wouldn't allow them to service my truck). I've tried to fix the gap but no luck without removing the entire seal.

How do you know the peice didn't have a crack or defect to start with? That plastic peice probably doesn't cost much anyway.

I am generally a "you broke it, you buy it" guy with warranties. However, I had the plastic handle cover on my gas cap release lever in a Subaru Forester break off after about 5 fill ups. Later, I took it in for service and mentioned it. The guy said they break all the time and it was fully covered. In your case though, you caught it with a sponge and put some unintended force on it.

Personally, I would just stick it on with a glob of black RTV silicone. It will be done faster and cheaper.

Should the piece have broken just by washing the truck? NO, so it could be covered under warranty. You were not doing anything out of the ordinary. However, with a thing so minor, I would just glue it back on and be done and save a trip to the dealer. If you become that guy who pulls up with minor issues to be covered under warranty you will become known as ¨that guy¨. Fix this yourself and save a warranty claim for a real issue. Just a little advice from someone in the repair industry.

    Take it to the dealer.

If you repair it yourself, and something further happens, like rust or leaks, you will be responsible.

That's what I'm inclined to believe. I found my own issue today while washing the truck for the first time. Was drying the windshield, lifted the wiper to dry it and noticed that the seal on the bottom of the windshield wasn't tight. Sent an email asking the service manager I know if it's something I need to bring in. Seems like it would allow water to drain down the firewall - maybe worse. The piece of trim that it's connected to is flimsy and moves with VERY little pressure. Kind of disappointing.

I wouldn't use a CA on that.... The white crust/vapor it leaves after it dries in almost impossible to remove. I'd use a dab of 'liquid nail' or the like.

Thanks for all the responses. I totally get the "you broke it you buy it", just sucks that I broke it after a month and a half. I'm going to email my friend at the dealership on Monday just to see about how important this piece is in keeping water out where the two seals come together. Otherwise I'll use some waterproof two-part epoxy and get on with it.

Just take it to the dealer and say a piece of molding is missing, I don't know what happened.
It should not be so fragile that a hand car wash causes damage and broken parts.

Knowing Toyota they will end up charging you $50 for that. I lost one of my weather strips on top of the truck I guess driving down the road one day, they charged me $120ish for them to replace it.
