Thanks guys! It's been a pretty crazy past few months for me. I've been switching from a couple jobs. I'm not working at a Chevy dealer until I can find something that I enjoy. A new truck will be in the works hopefully by the end of the year, I've looked at a couple 3rd gens and they are starting to grow on me

So my truck made a Big Bang and felt like it went into neutral. Made a noise like splines spinning while not fully engaged. Turned my locker on and it drives great with no noise but I can tell it's not actually locked cause the wheels don't chirp in turns. Any guesses what it is? I don't know shit about rear ends. Gonna just pull it and take it to yotamasters. Prolly regear while I'm at it. Just wondering what else may have broke on it.

@Airdog yeah you going to need to pull the 3rd. Take a look at your axle shafts. It almost sounds like the splines broke since you said it drives with the locker engaged.

What do you think the chances are it's the axle splines and not the splines on the 3rd?? Was kinda hoping its on the 3rd member side so it gives me reason to get it regeared.

Usually the axle shaft dies before the locker section of the 3rd. Turn the locker off and vehicle in park to see if a left or right wheel spins with the off the ground before pulling diff. For example jack one wheel up at a time.

Ok will do. I'll be doing it this afternoon when I get home from work. Either way if its the axle I imagine I still should pull the 3rd to clean out any metal pieces or shavings.

Oh yeah you won't need to have the locker off to try to spin each wheel. But yeah I'd still pull the diff anytime it does a clunk feeling like that. Something in there broke.

Ouch. It is painful dealing with rearends. Weird that it just chewed up the end as if the shaft slid out. Check out wheel bearings too.

Actually the shittiest part was taking the brake pads and all their associated springs apart. Everything else was a piece of cake including the 3rd...it just slide right out. I did check the wheel bearings they are solid with no play in in any direction. I just got back from dropping all the parts off at Yotamasters. I'll find out soon enough exactly what happened.

Just a bit painful. On the bright side I'm getting it regeared to 4.56...so this is just forcing me to do what i've wanted to do for a while now. Its just going to cost a bit more. Though Yotamasters seems to be very reasonable and extremely helpful. I was impressed with the customer service so far.

My buddy is getting 5.29's put in his 3rd this week. I'll have yotamasters do my locker. I'm just waiting because I might want to regear too after this cage and maybe be ready for 35's
