All this talk of second group on the 4x4 route has me thinkin.... I did tail gunner duty with CB last trip. Jeepers caught us going off on a side trail once, the radio got up back on track quickly. VERY GOOD idea having a radio front and rear.

So what is everyone's suggestion for a decent CB that isn't too expensive?

The Uniden 520Pro is a good little radio and only like $50. Very compact. I store mine in the center console with a cigar lighter plug for power, just set it on the seat when I use it (trail runs only).

You need a good antenna mounted in a decent position for more than short range, antenna is as important as the radio. I use a 3 foot long Firestick, would prefer a longer, but with all the overhead trees a 3' antenna on a spring works okay. Get the antenna SWR tested at least once a year.

You can be on the air for under $100. I got mine from Right Channel Radios on this here internet. More costly radios have stuff like Weather band, etc. I look out the window for weather report....

To add to what Bill said, make sure your antenna mount is solidly grounded to the frame of your truck, no matter where it's mounted. You can do this with some 12ga automotive wire between the mount and a bolt on the frame (bed, bumper bolts etc). Make sure to remove any paint from any surfaces where you connect to the frame.

One of the Unidens (510 or 520 or either) will friction fit in the Ash Tray Hole on the 1st Gens.

Antenna Mount needs to be grounded.
Coax Conductor needs to not be grounded to shield/exterior.
Antenna should have no/minimal obstructions nearby
Check SWR at various channels to try and adjust length to balance readings.

I've got a Ham in the truck and Race Radio in the buggy. Not sure how/if gonna do any CB anymore.

I'm just running a CB and have a couple handheld FRS/GMRS for long range if I need. I do need to get a handheld HAM.

I have run cbs and my handheld ham completely blows it out of the water. I have a 3foot firestik on my truck an my mobile ham with extended antenna completely destroys it for range.

Amazon has some descent cheap ones for around $30-40 then the extended antenna $15 ish... totally worth the investment
