How effective are the handhelds in actual use?

The FM is going to be clearer than AM/CB, but still 5W vs 4W (CB) plus short antennas usually struggle to transmit out from inside the cab.

Versus 50W of power in my vehicle units.

Never owned a ham in a vehicle projecting (50w) so i really couldn't compare... BUT I can compare it to everyones cbs that i used to wheel with in socal and the TW groups stopped using cbs completely an just went to handheld hams. Much clearer, you can also use it when spotting or to communicate to the rest of the wheeling group when outside of the truck.

I just keep both in the truck

My handheld Motorola FRS radios did 3 miles through a canyon with no line of sight, clear as day transmit and receive on low power mode. I'd guess the hams would blow that out of the water.

Sweet. Sounds like a handheld will be worthwhile. Good way for me to keep the headsets on with a spotter. They are popular at KOH so you can hear Race Ops and other info while up in a canyon watching away from the truck.

I've definitely received transmissions from repeaters at/over 50 miles away and transmitted close to 40 with the unit in the truck.

Planning on running the buggy on the course?

Me and a few buddies headed out there friday morning and got there in the evening.. caught the end of the race due to limited time off.. Still a blast watching buggies and crawlers hit back door and novices trying chocolate thunder friday night after the race...:bananadance::ballchain:

Definitely NOT Racing. Leaf Springs and not built to full safety standards.

BackDoor after Dark is intimidating enough. But want to hit some trails during the early week/after dark/weekend after.

Look forward to seeing the buggy in action! :D:thumbsup:

    It's that time again!

Three routes into camp are available.

Route 1 (4wd crew) Attendees running this route will be wheeling through the infamous 23 mile Rug Road Trail which begins in Mammoth and passes through the rugged Galiuro Mountains to our camping area in Turkey Creek, near the incredibly scenic Aravaipa Wilderness Preserve.

Info on Rug Road - http://www.experience-az.com/adventures/4wd/rugroad/rugroad.html

    http://www.blm.gov/az/st/en/prog/recreation/ohv/rug_road.html

***(4WD ROUTE ATTENDEES) SLIDERS, SOME LIFT AND LARGER-THAN-STOCK TIRES ARE REQUIRED FOR 4WD ROUTE. SOME SECTIONS ARE LONG, STEEP AND WINDING, WITH MANY LOOSE SHELF ROAD SECTIONS. VERY ROCKY/BOULDERY AREAS WILL BE ENCOUNTERED. ARIZONA PINSTRIPING IS A GUARANTEE AND SPOTTING THROUGH OBSTACLES MAY BE REQUIRED. CB RADIO IS ALSO RECOMMENDED***

Route 2 (Phoenix 2wd route) Route starts in Phoenix on US-60 through Apache Junct, Superior, Miami, and on to US-70 east of Globe, passing San Carlos, Peridot and Emery. 6-7 miles southeast of Ft Thomas, a right turn off of US 70 onto graded dirt Klondyke Rd. Travel west for 20-25 miles to Bonita/Aravaipa Rd and turn right, passing the former ghosttown of Klondyke and on to Aravaipa Canyon/Turkey Creek.

Turn coordinates for Hwy-70/Klondyke Rd (Right-hand turn)
    32.947174 -109.911682

    32.766346 -110.240562

Route 3 (Tucson 2wd route) Route travels east on I-10 83 miles to Willcox, exiting the highway and turn left onto Rex Allen Dr/Ft Grant Rd, which crosses over I-10 and heads north 31 miles to Bonita/Aravaipa Rd and the end of pavement. From there, its north on Bonita/Aravaipa for 42 miles, passing by the small former ghosttown of Klondyke and through to Aravaipa canyon/Turkey Creek.

    Main Campsite coords (approximate)
    32.87787 -11043545

    Departure Meet-up Locations -

    Tucson/Phoenix Badass 4wd Route Crew -
8-8:30 am Friday Oct 14th at the Circle K
    307 Highway 77
Mammoth, AZ 85192. Departure time to trail head at 8:30. Time on trail is 6 hrs minimum. Trail difficulty is rated 3.5-4/5.

Phoenix 2wd/prerunner Backdoor Deep Lube-less Penetration Crew - (Meet-up TBD)

Tucson 2wd/prerunner Banana-Ram From The South Penetration Crew - (Meet-up TBD)

Due to the size of the group interested in doing the 4wd route, and as long as drop-outs are minimal, the 4wd attendees will be split into two groups. Each group will have a trail leader with prior experience running the route.

The first group will depart 15-30 mins prior to the second, to avoid trail crowding at obstacles. This should allow both groups to make good time through the trail and to camp. Should dropouts occur (and they will) and if the attendee list drops under 10, we will revert back to a one-group run. Final details will be decided and discussed at the air down location at the trailhead.

I think ill shit myself if 4x4 needs two groups. My money is still on most dropping to 2wd or off entirely

Regardless, 4x4 needs to be experienced cause it really is a beautiful trail.

Jeepers, have you ever camped the area with the vacant houses?

You mean in Aravaipa Canyon itself? That's wilderness area and off-limits to camping.

No, in the middle-ish we drove through a small area that I assume was where miners slept? Small ghost town kinda spot.
